Step Off the Ship and Into Sitka's Morning Ghost Stories

A 45-minute guided walk for cruise passengers, May to mid-September 2027: meet at the cruise terminal, ride the free shuttle into downtown and finish before most shore excursions begin.

Haunted Sitka is a small, locally owned company. Its founder, Emily, says she leads most of its tours and has guided them since 2017. This is its early walk for cruise passengers: it starts at the pier where the ship docks, rides the free terminal shuttle into town, and then spends 45 minutes on foot among downtown's historic buildings. The operator pitches it as the quiet hour, before the cruise ships fill the streets and the shops open their doors.

The booking page sells tickets for ages 10 and up, an adult has to be on every booking, and one booking takes up to 15 travelers. The booking form also asks for your cruise ship and its arrival time. Cancel at least 24 hours before the start for a full refund; after that, this booking is non-refundable. The operator's own site gives 48 hours for bookings made directly with it.

Before the Crowds: Waking Up with the Ghosts Walking Tour45-minute guided history and ghost-story walk in downtown Sitka for cruise passengers, meeting at the Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal; ages 10 and up.www.viator.com

It Starts on the Pier, Five Miles From Downtown

The guide waits on the apron at the Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal, right where passengers step off the ship, wearing a teal blue coat and holding a sign with the tour's name. The terminal sits about five miles north of downtown. The tour gets into town on the terminal's free shuttle, a ride of about 10 to 15 minutes. The listing blocks out 90 minutes in all. The guided walk itself is 45 minutes, and the listing tells you to allow about 30 more for the shuttle bus.

The shuttle runs on reservations, and the operator's confirmation note tells guests on tours that start before 10:30 AM to book their free seat in advance. Every departure on the current calendar starts before 10:30 AM. The walk ends downtown, at the listing's end point by the Sitka Pioneer Home on Katlian Street. The shuttle back to the ship leaves from Harrigan Centennial Hall at 330 Harbor Drive, and the terminal says a return reservation may be needed on busy days.

One Named Stop, and the Group Stays Outside

The listing names one stop: five minutes outside the Russian Bishop's House, for the story of the building and the ghosts said to be inside. The group does not go in. The Park Service, which restored the house, says it was completed in 1842 and was the center of Russian Orthodox Church authority for a diocese that reached from California to Kamchatka, back when Sitka was New Archangel, the Russian colonial capital. If you want to see inside later, the Park Service hands out free tickets for guided tours of the second floor at the front desk.

The other 40 minutes take in several historic buildings and the ghost stories people still tell about them. The operator lists Russian America, shipwrecks, frontier hardships and forgotten cemeteries among the themes. It says the walk skips darkness and jump scares and leans on the quiet of a town still waking up.

Stairs, Standing and Fast-Changing Weather

The operator says guests should be able to walk about a mile, with frequent stops and plenty of standing, on a route with two different sets of stairs. The listing does not recommend the tour for travelers with mobility problems, even though it also marks it as suitable for all fitness levels. Service animals are allowed.

The operator warns that Sitka weather changes quickly and asks guests to dress in layers, with a raincoat and comfortable walking shoes. The listing's refund terms make no exception for weather.

When It Runs, and What If Your Ship Tenders

As of October 24, 2026, the booking calendar for this listing has no departures before May 10, 2027. From then through September 14, 2027, it shows 20 open mornings with one departure each, at 7:30, 8:30 or 9:30 AM, and most of them at 7:30 AM. The operator built the walk for cruise passengers and early risers and says it finishes before most shore excursions begin.

The operator's own cruise guide says most large ships dock at the terminal, while some smaller ships anchor and send passengers ashore by tender boat, near downtown. If your ship tenders, you will not step off at the terminal where this tour meets, and neither the listing nor the operator's pages for this tour say where tender passengers should go. Enter your ship's name in the booking form, which asks for it, and read the confirmation before you sail.

📍 Meet on the apron at the Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal, 4513 Halibut Point Road, where you step off the ship. Look for a guide in a teal blue jacket holding a sign with the tour's name.

  • Book your free terminal shuttle seat ahead; every current departure starts before 10:30 AM.
  • The walk ends downtown, by the Sitka Pioneer Home on Katlian Street.
  • The shuttle back to the ship leaves from Harrigan Centennial Hall, 330 Harbor Drive.

When the guide wraps up, you are already in the middle of town, and the operator's port guide notes that St. Michael's Cathedral, Castle Hill and the Russian Bishop's House are all within walking distance from there.
