Description

Raymond Sandoval’s site-specific sculpture portrays Chief Tamanend with a welcoming outstretched arm and an eagle perched on his shoulder holding a wampum belt. To the Lenni-Lenape, the turtle symbolized Mother Earth while the eagle represented a messenger of the Great Spirit, its talons carrying the token of their historic friendship accord. Installed at Front and Market Streets in June 1995, the nearly four-ton monument stands facing Alexander Milne Calder’s William Penn atop City Hall, reflecting Tamanend’s regional legacy as an enduring symbol of peace.
