A 90-minute beginner class covers board basics, strokes and turns, then takes you out on a guided paddle to use them.

Try Paddleboard 101 in Virginia Beach.

This class is set up for a first time on a paddleboard. The listing splits the ninety minutes into four parts: getting to know the board, paddle stroke skills, turns, and a guided paddleboard tour where the new skills get used. The board, paddle and life jacket come with the booking, and there is no gear to own or rent first. The listing also pitches the class at intermediate paddlers who want to improve their skills. It is run by FloatandFlowVa Yoga and Paddleboard Adventures, which describes itself on its own site as a small, woman-owned outdoor yoga and paddleboard company.

Tickets are sold per person and in a single band, adults aged 16 and up, with room for up to 15 travelers on one booking. A booking cancelled at least 24 hours before the start time is refunded in full; inside that window nothing comes back.

From Standing Up to Turning Around

The operator's own class page sums the course up as an introduction to SUP 101: board orientation, stroke skills, turns and a tour. Elsewhere on its site it says its beginner classes cover balance, strokes, launching and landing safely, and weather planning. The operator lists its instructors' certifications as PaddleFit, American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor and CPR, plus yoga and SUP yoga. Neither the listing nor the operator's class page gives a route or a distance for the closing tour. Three of the four parts are about handling the board, and the tour comes last.

The Launch Can Move

The listing meets at Owl Creek Boat Launch on General Booth Boulevard. Arrive 15 minutes before your start time and look for the paddleboarding gear near the launch area. It also says the class runs mainly in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, and that the location can change with environmental conditions. The operator's class page lists four launch spots for this class: the General Booth Boulevard ramp, a Rudee Inlet dock for ocean paddling, 64th Street, and Broad Bay. The listing tells travelers to check the booking confirmation for updates, and that is the place to look before you drive.

Age, Weight and the Waiver

The listing sells one ticket type, for ages 16 and up. The operator's own FAQ puts its age minimum at 13, but a 13 to 15 year old has no ticket on this listing. The same FAQ sets a weight limit of 250 pounds, based on board capacity, and the listing does not mention it. Every participant signs the operator's waiver. The listing describes the class as suitable for all physical fitness levels.

What to Wear, What to Bring

The operator's FAQ is specific about clothes: a bathing suit under comfortable gym clothes, with layers, and only bare feet or water shoes on the board. For the bag it lists sunglasses, a water bottle, sunscreen, a zip-lock bag for car keys and a waterproof bag for a phone. Food and drinks are not included. Getting to the launch is on you, with no hotel pickup, and tips are not covered by the ticket.

📍 The listed meeting point is Owl Creek Boat Launch at 701 General Booth Boulevard, Virginia Beach. City of Virginia Beach pages give the ramp as both 701 and 717 General Booth Boulevard, and its ramp page now calls it the Barry D. Knight Owl Creek Boat Ramp. The city says on-site parking is free and there are portable restrooms; the same page currently notes that the overflow lot across the boulevard is unavailable.

  • On the booking calendar checked on October 10, 2026, sessions run on Saturdays at 9:30 AM and 3:00 PM.
  • Arrive 15 minutes before your start time.
  • Full refund when cancelled at least 24 hours ahead. The listing says the class can be called off for bad weather.

By the end of the ninety minutes, the strokes and turns from the start of class are what carry you through the tour.
