Description

Local residents and the Seattle Conservation Corps built the site by clearing demolition rubble and spreading fresh soil to establish the first Central District community garden. Along the perimeter, artist Mary Coss collaborated with Garfield High School Jazz Band students to interview neighborhood club musicians, shaping their personal stories into the fence design. On closer inspection, the colorful panels based on seed imagery carry written histories tracing the local music circuit and Seattle's emergence as a jazz town.
