South Shore Nature Sanctuary
4.8 (95)park
Restored dunes and prairie meet migrating birds and open skyline views at this quiet lakefront retreat.
Description

Set within South Shore Cultural Center Park, this refuge gathers a microcosm of native Chicagoland habitats across just over six acres, weaving together savanna, woodland, and regionally rare beach dunes rooted with sea rocket and marram grass. Button bush and blue iris trace the wetland edge, while purple coneflower and butterfly milkweed anchor the meadow. At the peninsula's point sit two limestone council rings—a hallmark of Prairie-style landscape architect Jens Jensen, who conceived the circular stone benches as democratic spaces for gathering by the water.
