Known as Sounds of Brazil, SOB's has been a downtown Manhattan fixture since 1982, when founder Larry Gold made it one of the first clubs to bring hip-hop, R&B, Latin, African, Caribbean, Haitian, Brazilian, South Asian, and alternative sounds to the city's stages. The programming still spans those genres today. Visitors describe a 90s hip-hop night as a total vibe with solid sound and lighting, and an R&B event that exceeded expectations despite some poor reviews. The space is kept clean, service runs from door to bar, and bar bites round out the drinks—though cocktails may be hit or miss.
