Sort Kids' Clothes at Cradles to Crayons, Then Lunch in Lincoln Square
The Tuesday morning shift at the Giving Factory runs like any other shift, even though it falls on Giving Tuesday, when the official calendar asks for donations rather than hosting a special session. Two hours of sorting inside a heated warehouse, a volunteer leader on the floor the whole time, and lunch waiting less than two miles north in Lincoln Square.
📍 Two stops, one morning
🧥 Start where the coats come in
The shift starts at 9:30 AM and check in runs fifteen minutes earlier, so pull into the back lot behind the business park and look for the purple and yellow signs. A volunteer leader walks the group through the stations for the full two hours. Pre-register through the volunteer portal, create an account, and pick that slot, because only pre-registered volunteers get inside and the door turns away walk-ins. Kids from five to fifteen need an adult with them for the whole shift, one adult covers up to three elementary school kids, and closed-toe shoes are required on the floor. The page also asks each person to bring at least one children's item to donate, no minimum, so an outgrown coat from the closet at home can ride along in the back seat.

🥨 Cross to Lincoln Square for the deli
Gene's sits on the pedestrian stretch of North Lincoln Avenue in Lincoln Square, about two miles north of the Giving Factory and five to ten minutes by car. Without a car, walk a block east to Western Avenue and take the no. 49 Western bus to Lawrence, a couple of minutes from the deli door, and the Brown Line Western stop makes the same short walk. Inside, more than forty smoked sausages and meats are made here daily, the counter runs to cabbage rolls and schnitzel, the pastry case holds over thirty European cakes and pastries, and the import shelves are already stocked with 2026 Christmas confections and novelties.

🗺️ Make a half day of it
Both stops fit inside one winter morning because the warehouse is indoors and the deli is a few minutes away. Take the shift first since it has a fixed start, then eat without rushing, with Gene's open until 8 PM on weekdays and 4 PM on Sunday. The rooftop beer garden is closed for the winter, so this is a counter stop rather than a view. The shift costs nothing and lunch is the only spend of the day. Book the 9:30 AM slot and the afternoon stays free, long enough for a walk along Lincoln Avenue before the drive home. Evening shifts are occasional rather than fixed, and the events calendar lists a Giving Factory @ Night session on Dec 8, 6 to 7:30 PM. Official info at cradlestocrayons.org/chicago.
☕ Three more stops on the avenue
Three more stops sit within walking distance of the deli, one for coffee, one for books in a children's section, and one for folk music.
