Snorkel Turtle Canyon, Where Honu Get Their Shells Cleaned

A short run out from Ala Wai Boat Harbor, a long stretch in the water over a reef that green sea turtles visit on purpose, and a guarantee that you will see one. Island Splash sends the Paulele out nine times a day and tells you to take the first.

If no turtle turns up, you ride again for free. That is an unusual promise to make about wild animals. The cleaning station is what makes it possible: honu have a standing reason to be at this exact patch of reef, where the fish strip algae and parasites off their shells.

The boat anchors over the spot after a short run down the Waikiki coastline. Diamond Head sits off the rail most of the way out.

Island Splash started in 2023 and works out of Ala Wai Boat Harbor. The boat is the Paulele, a 2025 power catamaran licensed for 49 passengers and deliberately run below that. Snorkel gear, flotation vests, cold drinks and the sighting guarantee all come with the ticket.

Why the Crew Points You at the Earliest Boat

Nine departures, seven days a week, and the crew does not treat them as interchangeable. Their own FAQ makes the case for the earliest boat: calmest water, best visibility, fish and turtles at their most active, the fewest other boats on the reef, and the best odds of spinner dolphins on the way out.

The reef is small, and every operator in Waikiki knows where it is. Getting there first is most of the advantage.

A later boat still reaches the same anchorage. It reaches it in less settled water, with more company overhead.

Budget two and a half hours from check-in to stepping back onto the dock. The two published figures disagree: the operator's page says about an hour and forty-five minutes in total with an hour in the water, and the listing you book through says two hours with fifty minutes. Plan on the longer trip and the shorter swim and nothing will catch you out.

The Dock Sits Behind a Yellow Parasail Booth

Ala Wai Boat Harbor, 1651 Ala Moana Blvd. That address gets you to the right harbor. It does not get you to the right boat, and the operator says so directly: search Island Splash Tours in Google or Apple Maps and the pin lands on the actual slip. The loading dock is behind the yellow parasail booth, and the boat is the Paulele.

Parking in the harbor lot is paid, and the pay machines run off a QR code, so bring a phone that works.

Check in 30 minutes before departure. Boats leave on schedule, and the operator is blunt about the consequence: arrive after your departure time and your ticket may be forfeited and nonrefundable.

Three Guides Go In With You, and Everyone Wears a Vest

One captain and three in-water snorkel guides work every departure, and all of the guides are lifeguard certified. They stay in the water with the group for the whole session. Everyone wears a snorkel vest. Mask, snorkel and fins come with the ticket, and flotation buoys are on hand for anyone who wants something to hold onto.

That support has limits. The operator calls snorkeling physically demanding and recommends you know how to swim before you book.

The age rules are the operator's own:

  • Three and up may go in the water
  • Under twelve should be with an adult and confident swimming
  • Every reservation needs an adult on it

Cold soft drinks are included. A towel, reef-safe sunscreen and a reusable water bottle are not, so pack them. Storage bins are available on board if you ask the crew. The boat is BYOB, though the crew holds the line on alcohol until the in-water portion is done.

Honu Are Protected, and Ten Feet Is the Rule

Hawaiian green sea turtles are protected under state and federal law. The operator requires guests to stay at least ten feet back and not to touch, chase or disturb them. The turtles have no such rule and sometimes close the distance themselves, which is a different thing entirely.

The reef holds more than honu. Expect reef fish in numbers, moray eels, octopus tucked into the rocks, sea urchins, and spotted eagle rays out over the deeper sand. Spinner dolphins turn up year round and most often on the morning runs. The operator's FAQ puts humpback season between December and April, when whales sometimes pass offshore along the Waikiki coast.

The company works with the Ocean Alliance Project, photographing and identifying individual turtles at Turtle Canyon to feed ongoing reef monitoring.

Take the 7:00 a.m. and you are back on the dock by mid-morning, salt still in your hair, with the whole day still in front of you.
