Snorkel Molokini Crater and a Turtle Cove in One Morning

Two snorkel stops in four hours: inside the submerged crater, then a cove the crew visits for green sea turtles.

Plan a morning at Molokini and a turtle cove.

Molokini is a partially submerged volcanic crater off south Maui, and the crescent of rim still above water is what makes it worth a crossing. Boats moor along the inside curve.

Maui Reef Adventures runs this morning on Reef Explorer, a yellow sixty-foot raft the operator says reaches the crater in under thirty minutes. Leave Ma'alaea at 8:00 AM, snorkel twice, and be back at the dock by noon.

The trip is fixed at four hours with one departure in the morning. One booking takes up to fifteen travelers, and every passenger needs a ticket, including children.

Snorkel gear and flotation devices come with the trip. So does the food: breakfast pastries and Maui Gold pineapple on the way out, then freshly made sandwiches, chips, granola bars, and drinks. A vegetarian option is available if you say so when you book.

Inside the Crater

The boat ties up along the inside curve, the sheltered side of the rim. The operator counts over 250 species of reef fish here along with the coral formations. That count is the operator's own.

All snorkel gear and flotation devices are handed out on board. Towels are not; bring your own.

The Second Stop

After the crater the boat moves to a site the crew calls Turtle Cove, where Hawaiian green sea turtles are resident. The itinerary for this trip lists Makena Beach as the point for this leg.

The operator describes the stop as private, with no other boats in sight. Weather decides the actual site: trips and snorkel locations can change or be cancelled, and the operator makes that call.

Boarding at Ma'alaea

Check-in is 7:30 AM at the Ma'alaea Harbor loading dock, at the very end of the pier by the biodiesel station. The boat is yellow and docks at 7:30 for boarding.

Seating is first come, first served. The boat cannot be held for late passengers, missed trips are not refunded, and no-show reservations are charged in full.

Parking is public and paid. Pay at the secure parking signs by QR code and enter your plate number, and leave time for it before check-in.

Who the Boat Suits

The minimum age is four and there are no lap infants: everyone on board needs their own ticket, and an adult has to be on the booking.

The operator does not recommend the trip for non-swimmers, for travelers with heart or other serious medical conditions, or for anyone in poor health. A moderate level of physical fitness is the stated expectation.

Large backpacks and luggage stay ashore. Guides work in English and Spanish.

Cancelling at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure returns the full fare. If the operator cancels for weather, you choose between a reschedule and a full refund. Booking closes two hours before departure, and the operator confirms each reservation by hand.

A mobile or paper ticket is accepted, one per booking. The dock is at the end of the Ma'alaea pier, and the yellow hull is the one to look for at 7:30.
