Description

Wealthy Philadelphian Richard Smith funded the project with a half-million-dollar bequest, entrusting its design to architect James H. Windrim and artist oversight to the Fairmount Park Art Association. An 1897 competition drew 59 entries, resulting in commissions for 13 distinguished sculptors of the era. The finished memorial unites nine busts, three figures, and two equestrians, showcasing work by celebrated artists including Daniel Chester French, Alexander Stirling Calder, and Charles Grafly.
