Six Tastings in Two Hours Along Flushing's Main Street

A guide orders for you at each counter, names the region every dish comes from, and hands you back to the 7 train at the end.

Start with jianbing on Flushing's Main Street.

Flushing's Chinese food blocks run along Main Street and Roosevelt Avenue, out at the eastern end of the 7 line in Queens. The operator's argument is that Manhattan's Chinatown gets the visitors and Flushing gets the regulars. That is a sales line. The neighbourhood's record is not: Flushing dining rooms carry MICHELIN Guide listings, and the New York Times put one of them inside the top twenty of its 2024 list of the hundred best restaurants in the city.

Two hours, on foot, no vehicle. A guide meets the group indoors, walks the blocks, orders at each counter, and tells you what you are holding before you eat it.

Two departures a day, noon and five in the afternoon, both from the same spot on Main Street. Groups run up to 15 and a guide works in English or Mandarin.

The Six Things You Eat

The list is fixed and the operator publishes it: jianbing guozi, roujiamo, a Cantonese rice roll, Taiwanese salty fried chicken, handmade jiaozi, and a bottle of water. Six items, and they do not come out of the same kitchen tradition.

Jianbing guozi is a Tianjin breakfast: thin batter spread on a flat griddle, an egg cracked onto it, then folded around a sheet of fried cracker. Roujiamo is Shaanxi, chopped stewed pork packed into a baked flatbread that is layered rather than soft. Flushing has form with that one: Xi'an Famous Foods started in 2005 as a basement counter in the Golden Mall on Main Street before it spread across the city. The rice roll is Cantonese, steamed rice sheets rolled, cut and served in soy. The salty fried chicken is Taiwanese, cut small and fried with pepper salt. The jiaozi are folded by hand.

That spread is the actual argument for booking a walk instead of a table. Four regional traditions inside two hours is the thing a single restaurant cannot do for you.

Where It Starts and Where It Leaves You

The group meets inside the Starbucks at 38-05 Main Street, which the operator pins to a landmark: it sits across Main Street from St. George's Church, the stone spire that is visible from most of the block. Meeting indoors is worth something in January, and again in August.

The walk finishes at the Roosevelt Avenue subway station, where the 7 heads back toward Manhattan — about half an hour to Midtown on a local train, and less when the express is running. The tour does not loop back to the starting point. If you drove in, the end of the walk is not where you parked.

Noon or Five, and What You Pay

Both departure options run the same two hours and the same six tastings. The noon tour leaves at 12:00 and the evening tour at 17:00.

Price moves with party size rather than with the time slot. One traveller booking alone pays USD 79. At two or more the rate is USD 69 each, which is the headline number on the listing.

A single booking holds a maximum of 15 people. Larger groups are told to split the party across several bookings rather than ask for an exception.

Before You Book

Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund. Inside that window there is no refund. The ticket is mobile and issued one per booking.

The adult age band runs from 6 to 70, and the operator rates the walk as suitable for all fitness levels. Gratuities for the guide sit outside the price.

Everything on the list is covered by the ticket. A second helping of anything is yours to buy.

Ratings come from two pools and both run high. Viator shows 85 reviews averaging 5.0, and TripAdvisor adds 180 more, also averaging 5.0. Combined that is 265 reviews at 4.97.

The two pins below mark the Main Street and Roosevelt Avenue ends of the route. They are real places on those blocks, not the tour's own tasting stops — the operator does not publish the individual counters it takes you to.
