Six Tasting Stops Add Up to Lunch in Downcity Providence

A guided walk through Downcity Providence that stops at six eateries and adds up to a full lunch by the last one.

Plan a six-stop tasting lunch in Downcity Providence.

The walk leaves one street corner at 12:00 PM and comes back to the same corner about three hours later. In between it stops at six or more eateries in the Downcity Arts District, and you sit down at most of them. The operator counts roughly 45 minutes of sitting across the whole route, and that is what makes six tastings add up to a meal.

Rhode Island Red Food Tours runs it. Paula Silva started the company in 2015 and still runs it. Group size tops out at 14. A single booking holds at most five travelers, which puts a larger party on two receipts that meet at the same corner.

Two versions of the same walk sit on the booking page. One is food only. The other adds three alcohol tastings at the stops that pour, and everyone on that ticket has to be 21 or over.

Both cover the guide, every food tasting, and the neighborhood commentary. Gratuities sit outside the ticket, and the operator's own answer on that is 18 to 20 percent, carried in cash.

Nine on the list, at least six on the day

The published roster for this walk runs to nine places. Ellie's Bakery, built on a Parisian bistro idea. The Malted Barley, a pub listing thirty-seven or more taps with pretzels out of its own oven. Dune Brothers Seafood, a New England fish shack. Charuma, a Taiwanese tea bar. Plant City, a plant-based food hall. Suya Joint, a West African kitchen. Geoff's Superlative Sandwiches, open in Providence more than forty years. Cielito Mexican Kitchen, family run. And cereal-milk ice cream sold out of a painted shipping container on the Providence River.

A given walk hits at least six of those nine, and the listing says tasting locations can change without notice. Time Out's own 2024 walk came back with Plant City, the squash blossom taco at Cielito, and the hot pretzels at Malted Barley. Marilyn G., in Rhode Island for the first time, wrote that at many of the stops "the owners came out to talk with us and tell us about themselves, their food and their restaurants."

A short walk with long sit-downs

1.7 miles, one slight incline, and a moderately casual pace between stops. The operator rates it for all fitness levels, says the group is on its feet for most of the route, and puts the seated time at roughly 45 minutes in total. Strollers do not fit at some of the tasting locations, and the operator does not recommend the walk for children under eight.

The route works through the Downcity Arts District, with at least one stop sitting right on the Providence River. The commentary between tastings covers the architecture and the neighborhood as well as the plates. Tours go out rain or shine. Shoes are the one thing the operator gets specific about: flip-flops, heels, and dress shoes are all on the list of what to leave at home.

Inside the ticket, and outside it

Inside: the guide, every food tasting, and the neighborhood commentary. The alcohol ticket adds three drink tastings. Water mostly comes from the establishments along the way, and the operator still suggests carrying a bottle.

Outside: gratuities, anything you buy for yourself, and parking. Shopping during the tour is off the table. The kitchens are timed to the group's arrival and the schedule carries no slack, though a guide may leave room for it at the end. Dietary needs have to be flagged when you buy the ticket. Vegetarian substitutions work at most stops with notice, pescatarian at some stops and not others, and the operator says it cannot arrange alternatives on the day itself.

Buy it before 9:30 in the morning

Tickets are online and in advance only. No cash, no walk-ups, and sales close at 9:30 AM on the day of the tour. One booking holds up to five travelers. The tour itself holds 14.

All sales are final. The operator and the listing agree on the wording: no refunds, no exchanges, no rescheduling once the ticket is bought, and no refund for a missed departure. Weather is not an exception; the walk goes out in it. The season runs from spring into November, and the booking calendar carries the actual dates.

📍 The corner is Ship Street where it meets Dyer and Eddy, on the northwest side, listed as 1 Ship Street. Be there by 11:45 AM. The group leaves at 12:00 PM. The operator also asks you to read the confirmation email, which carries the exact meeting point and can change.

Driving in, the closest options are the South Street Landing garage and the lot at 144 Dyer Street, with metered spaces around the neighborhood and some four-hour meters. Summer weekends and event nights fill them. Leave extra time.

The walk ends back at the same corner between 3:00 and 3:30 PM, and the running list of other places the guide points out along the way is the part you carry home.
