Six Hours From the Strip to Nevada's Valley of Fire
A small van runs you out to Nevada's first state park and back, with the walking kept short and lunch among the rocks.
Valley of Fire holds 40,000 acres of bright red Aztec sandstone set inside gray and tan limestone mountains, northeast of Las Vegas. The Civilian Conservation Corps put up the first cabins and campgrounds in 1933. It opened on Easter Sunday in 1934 as Nevada's first state park, and the legislature gave it legal designation the year after.
Wind and water cut that sandstone into honeycombed walls, balanced blocks, and long striped slopes that change color as the light moves across them. The park now takes close to a million visitors a year.

Pickup runs from a list of Las Vegas hotels, and you choose yours when you book. The listing caps the group at thirteen. Lunch and park admission both sit inside the price.

The itinerary names a run of formations: the Beehives near the west entrance, Atlatl Rock, Rainbow Vista, a Silica Dome overlook, and Elephant Rock out at the far end. The listing says scenic stops can be swapped for weather, park regulations, or the size of the vehicle on the day. Treat that list as the intended route.
The Beehives are sandstone domes grooved by cross-bedding, the record of old dunes that stacked at shifting angles. Elephant Rock sits near the east entrance and takes a short walk to reach the angle where the trunk resolves. Between the two, the road runs through the band of red rock the park is named for.
Four of the six hours are scheduled inside the park. The other two cover the pickups and the road.
Carvings Older Than the State

People have moved through this valley for something like 11,000 years. The clearest trace they left is petroglyphs pecked into the rock by the Basketmaker culture about 2,500 years ago, with Early Pueblo work layered on top later.
The carvings sit on desert varnish, the dark coating that builds on exposed sandstone over long stretches of time. Cutting through it exposes the pale rock underneath, which is why the figures still read from a distance. Atlatl Rock carries one of the better-known panels, named for the throwing stick that turns up among the animal and human shapes.
The park holds petrified wood as well, logs that washed in and mineralised long before any of the carving began.
The Trails Shut for the Summer
Nevada State Parks closes many of this park's trails every year from May 15 to September 30. The closed list covers Fire Wave, White Domes, Pastel Canyon, Seven Wonders and several more, which is most of what people picture when they picture walking here. The stated reason is the record of medical calls, search and rescue missions, and deaths on those trails in summer heat.
A half-day tour booked inside that window still runs. It works the road, the overlooks, and the short approaches that stay open, and the operator's terms say an alternative is provided when a scenic spot is closed.
There is a second closure worth putting in your calendar. The park shuts to all visitors from December 1 to December 14 each year for maintenance, and guided tours are among the commercial activities barred across those two weeks.
Pickup, Booster Seats, and What to Carry
Your pickup hotel has to be settled at least three days out. The operator's terms are blunt about what happens otherwise: a missed tour is not their responsibility and the fare is not refunded. Late arrivals are given ten minutes past the stated meeting time, and no longer.
Bring shoes you can walk rough ground in, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and more water than feels necessary. Cash is worth having. Lunch is deli-style and eaten in the park.
A few rules catch families out:
- Children under six need a booster seat for the van under state law, and guests supply it themselves
- Anyone travelling with an infant brings their own car seat
- Under-18s travel with an adult
- City passes and separately bought attraction tickets are not accepted
Wheelchair-accessible vehicles are not guaranteed without prior approval, so any access need has to go in before the booking is confirmed.
Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the scheduled departure time.
One piece of road news for late 2026. The park's west entrance, the one facing Las Vegas, is closed Monday through Thursday while a new entrance lane and fee booth go in, and traffic on those days is routed round to the east entrance off State Route 169 or 167. The work is expected to run through the end of the year.
📍 The park sits at 29450 Valley of Fire Highway. The pin below marks Park MGM, one of the listed pickup hotels. The park itself is not yet in our map data.
Go in the cooler half of the year and the light does the work for you. Late afternoon is when the sandstone earns the name.
