Shore-Dive Koloa Landing's Turtle Reef on Kauai's South Shore
Two guided tanks for certified divers 10 and up: about four hours, gear included, starting at 7:30 AM or 12:30 PM.
Koloa Landing is a small horseshoe-shaped bay on Kauai's south shore, and this dive starts from a former boat ramp a few steps from the reef. Dive Kauai runs two guided dives here, one along each side of the bay, with your gear set up beside the water.

This listing is for certified divers only. One booking covers up to six people, all ages 10 and up, and the operator says it keeps this dive to six divers or fewer.

Hanaka'ape Bay, the cove at Koloa Landing, is sheltered from most surf, wind and chop, and the reef begins just off the ramp. The surface swim is short. The operator dives the two sides of its U-shaped reef as two separate dives, with a rest on shore in between. The listing puts maximum depth at about 50 feet, with average bottom time around 45 minutes per dive depending on your air. The operator's own depth range for this dive is 27 to 50 feet.
The listing calls entry and exit very easy. Divers who wrote about this shore dive between 2022 and 2026 are less unanimous. Several describe getting in and out as tricky, some blaming currents or surf, and others call it straightforward. One diver put it this way in March 2025: "Getting in can be tricky but just watch your step."
Turtles First, Then Look Smaller

The operator lists Hawaiian green sea turtles, up to seven species of moray eel including the rare dragon eel, leaf and devil scorpionfish, octopus, hermit crabs and cone, auger and helmet snails as regular sightings here. From December through April, it says, divers can often hear humpback whales singing during the dive. It calls frogfish, spotted eagle rays and reef sharks rare.
Each dive starts with a site and marine ecology briefing. In October 2026 one diver credited the two guides with spotting a pair of turtles asleep under the rocks, which the diver says they would have swum right past. The operator also mentions a pair of Hawaiian scarlet cleaner shrimp that will clean a diver's teeth if invited.
Two Confirmations and a Card
Your Viator booking pays for the dive. Dive Kauai then texts a form to the cell phone on the booking, and the dive is confirmed once that form is complete and Dive Kauai's own confirmation email arrives. Put the whole group on that one form, use a number that works on the island, and have every diver sign the electronic waiver before arriving.
Bring your certification card, either the physical card or the digital eCard in your agency's app. The operator does not accept photos or photocopies of a card, and it accepts PADI, NAUI, SSI and other recognized agencies. If your last dive was more than two years ago, or this would be your first ocean dive since certifying, the operator strongly recommends its separate Refresher dive instead.
Keep the Next 18 Hours Low
The operator's safety rule is no activity above 1,000 feet within 18 hours after a two-tank ocean dive. On Kauai it names the drive up to Waimea Canyon, helicopter and airplane tours, and any flight off the island, even the short hop to Oahu. It also says staff may keep you out of the water if your plans break the rule. So Waimea Canyon, flightseeing and your flight off Kauai belong before the dive or at least 18 hours after it.
The operator says south shore mornings are typically calm and trade winds pick up in the early afternoon. Of the two start times, 7:30 AM and 12:30 PM, the morning one falls in that calmer window. Dives run rain or shine, the operator makes the conditions call, and when it cancels it offers a reschedule or a full refund.
📍 Drive to the Koloa Landing dive site, not the Koloa Landing hotel. From the Poipu roundabout, take the exit signed for Spouting Horn, turn left immediately onto Hoonani Road, and look for the telephone pole with a dive flag marked Koloa Landing. Check in 15 minutes before your start time; the crew cannot wait for late arrivals.
Arrive in your swimsuit; there are no changing facilities. Bring a towel, reef-safe sunscreen and a reusable water bottle: the listing still includes bottled water, but the operator's booking notes say it no longer hands out plastic bottles. Mask, fins, wetsuit, BCD, regulator, tank and weights are included, with a fee if rental gear is lost or damaged beyond repair. Tips are not included. Cancel at least 24 hours ahead for a full refund. The listing does not recommend this dive for pregnant travelers or anyone with poor cardiovascular health.
Between the two dives you rest in a chair by the water, with an ice chest of drinks and snacks.
