Shape Wild Clay at an Off-Grid Studio Near Julian
Becky Sangha shows your group how she gathers and prepares clay from the land, then you build and paint one small earthenware pot to fire at home.
Becky Sangha is a pottery artist who collects her own clay from the land around her studio in the hills outside Julian. In this three-hour session she shows your group where that clay comes from and how she prepares it, then you shape a small earthenware vessel of your own. No experience is needed.

The listing sells this as a private session, so the table is only your group: up to six travelers on one booking, at USD 72 for adults 18 to 54, USD 67 for ages 10 to 17 and USD 65 for 55 and over. Children under 10 cannot be booked, and every booking needs at least one adult. Online booking closes 48 hours before the start, and confirmation is instant.
Intro to Wild Clay/Earthenware Pottery WorkshopClay, tools and pigments included · Your group only · 3 hourswww.viator.comThe Clay Comes Out of the Ground Here

The workshop starts with the material itself. Becky explains how to recognize clay in the wild and how harvested clay is cleaned and made workable, and visitors who wrote about the class single out that part. You build by hand with scrapers and smoothing stones, and one visitor described the results as pinch pots. The clay, the tools and a printed guide to making earthenware are included, along with bottled water.
Paint It With Earth, Fire It at Home

Decoration uses natural pigment paints and yucca brushes, and one visitor noted that the paint itself is made from other clays. Your pot leaves unfired: Becky sends you home with instructions for firing it in an open fire yourself. Bring something flat to carry the piece in the car, and think ahead about where at home you could safely light a small fire.
Meet at the Lake, Drive In Together
The group meets at Lake Cuyamaca, 15027 Highway 79, and drives in together to Becky's studio in Cuyamaca Woods, an off-grid community about ten miles outside Julian and five minutes from the lake. This is a drive up into the mountains from San Diego, so leave the city with plenty of time before the start. As of November 4, 2026, sessions start at 2:00 PM on Thursdays and Fridays and 10:00 AM on Saturdays and Sundays. A handful of dates around Thanksgiving, early December and the year-end holidays are closed on the calendar.
Fitness, Pets and Cancellations
The listing asks for at least a moderate level of fitness and does not recommend the class for anyone with a spinal injury. Service animals are allowed. The studio is also Becky's home, and visitors mention her dog, Colby. For a full refund, cancel at least 24 hours before the start. The operator can also cancel for bad weather or too few travelers, though one January visitor called it a perfect way to spend a foggy, wet Sunday.
📍 Meet at Lake Cuyamaca, 15027 Highway 79, Julian, CA 92036, then follow the group to the studio. The listing says the site looks out from North Peak all the way to the Pacific, and you drive home with a pot made from that ground.
