Description

The original 25-foot torii gate was created for the 1934 International Potlatch celebration and moved to the grounds in 1935, holding deep significance for Rainier Valley residents and the local Japanese-American community for fifty years until weathering prompted its removal. Marking the park's centennial, the Friends of Seward Park spearheaded a community fundraising campaign to rebuild the monument. Designed by Murase Associates and completed in November 2020, the structure re-establishes that welcoming presence along the park approach.
