Senate Fountain
4.6 (69)attraction
A tiered granite fountain offering a shaded, peaceful retreat on Capitol Grounds with clear views of the Capitol dome.
Description

Sited directly above the Senate underground garage between Capitol Hill and Union Station, the 1932 design by Bennett, Parsons and Frost turns infrastructure into a choreographed cascade. Water projects from a Minnesota Pink granite monolith fitted with lion-head spouts, spilling across scalloped stone rims and an oval basin before funneling underground to three sculpted terrace bubbler fountains and a broad reflecting pool below. At night, 114 underwater fixtures cycle red, green, blue, and clear lighting on a 20-minute computerized program.
