Inside a 1909 schoolhouse seized by activists in 1985, a museum of Northwest Black history and art sits next to a free park.

Start inside, then walk the park.

🌳 Galleries Inside, Park Outside

The Northwest African American Museum fills the old Colman School, a 1909 brick schoolhouse. Activists occupied it in 1985 to claim a Black history museum; it opened in 2008 with 36 affordable apartments above.

The museum's Current Exhibits page (checked October 30) lists The Story of the Salute among its shows. A replica podium, pin-making and a coloring station are the interactive pieces; ask the front desk which are set up that day.

Right outside, the public Jimi Hendrix Park is a free second stop. Museum doors run Wednesday to Sunday, 10 AM to 5 PM. Adults pay ten dollars, students with ID eight, youth 18 and under pay five dollars, and children three and younger are free. Parking in front is free in MUSEUM spaces only.
