Seattle Art Museum to Pioneer Square: Two Free Art Stops on One Thursday Night
Fulgencio Lazo links both stops: a Day of the Dead sand painting on SAM's fourth floor, then his paintings of Zapotec memory and present-day tension fifteen minutes away in Pioneer Square.
📍 Seattle Art Museum to ArtX Contemporary
🎨 Start with the sand painting
Admission is free all day and the doors stay open until 8 p.m.; special ticketed shows cost extra. On the fourth floor, Fulgencio Lazo and his team build this year's tapete for Día de los Muertos, a memorial sand painting in colored sand, and the gallery adds sculptures honoring Seattle community organizations. The Studio tables run 4 to 8 p.m. with artist-designed stamps, ink, and markers, and a SAM Gallery artist talk goes 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

🚶 Fifteen minutes to Zapotec memory
The second stop is a walk: fifteen minutes south on First Avenue. ArtX is showing Lazo's solo show, Iluminando Caminos (Lighting the Way), through November 14. These paintings grow from his Zapotec heritage and answer the political tensions of the moment, so the sand story upstairs continues here in paint. The gallery stays open until 8 p.m. for the art walk. Free parking is only at the Frye Garage and 450 Alaskan, 5 to 10 p.m., first come, first served, with a gallery voucher.

🧭 Both stops before eight
Start at 5 p.m.; the sand painting and the Studio tables fit in an hour. Leave by 6 and the fifteen-minute walk reaches ArtX around 6:20, with seventy minutes to see the show and still leave by 7:30. Choose the 5:30 talk at SAM Gallery and you should cut the second stop to forty-five minutes. Neither stop charges admission.
