Sea Lion Viewing Area
4.7 (6,841)attraction
Hundreds of wild sea lions sprawl, bark, and jostle on wooden docks set against the San Francisco skyline.
Description

Sea lions first began hauling out on PIER 39’s K-Dock shortly after the October 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Supported by plentiful food and protection from predators, the group swelled from an initial handful to over 2,100 in mid-2024. The area offers up-close views looking out toward Alcatraz, though visits are routinely crowded and noisy.
