Scandal, Murder and the Rice Hotel: Houston's 16-and-Over Ghost Walk

A 9:00 PM walk through downtown Houston for ages 16 and up, built on crime, scandal and reported hauntings.

Ghost City Tours runs three after-dark walks in Houston, and this is the one it keeps for older guests. Its all-ages walk and its 21-and-over pub crawl both start at 8:00 PM. This one starts an hour later, at 9:00 PM, and the listing sells a single age band, 16 to 99.

The listing frames every stop around real crimes, political scandals and reported hauntings. The operator's page adds content notes for graphic historical violence, true-crime detail and adult language, and puts the mix at about equal parts history and paranormal.

The card books the 9:00 PM start, the only time the listing sells. Tickets are per person in one band, ages 16 to 99, and one booking holds up to twelve travelers. Gratuities are not included.

Market Square First, Then the Old Spaghetti Warehouse

The listing names four stops of about ten minutes each. Those four stops add up to about 40 of the 90 minutes, and the operator describes about a mile on foot with frequent stops for storytelling.

It opens at Market Square Park, which the listing calls the birthplace of Houston: the site of the city's earliest markets, ports and government buildings, and of fires, accidents, crime and brutal labor conditions. Downtown Houston+ lists the park as open daily from 6 AM to 11 PM. The second stop is McIntyre's, the building the listing identifies as the former Spaghetti Warehouse and calls long rumored to be one of Houston's most haunted locations, with reports of apparitions and unexplained movement around its elevator and interior spaces. That bar has since closed: Google Maps marks McIntyre's Downtown at 901 Commerce Street permanently closed, and the chain's own location list no longer includes it.

The Rice, Then the Esperson Buildings

The third stop is The Rice, which the listing describes as once Houston's grandest hotel, steeped in scandal, political history and murder, from the mysterious death of its namesake benefactor to reports of lingering guests. The fourth is the pair of Esperson towers, which the listing calls monuments to love and perseverance, tied to the Esperson family's rise and loss. Employees and visitors there have reported apparitions, elevator disturbances and shadowy figures.

Neither the listing nor the operator's page mentions going inside any of these buildings.

Who the Operator Says This Walk Is For

Under 16 cannot book: the listing's only ticket band starts at 16, and the operator's page says the walk is strictly for guests 16 and older, with mature themes, graphic historical content and strong language. Its tour profile recommends the walk for couples, paranormal enthusiasts, true-crime fans and history enthusiasts. The same profile lists families with teens among the groups it does not recommend, even though 16-year-olds can book. For younger company, the operator runs its all-ages Ghosts of Houston walk at 8:00 PM.

Rain, Shoes, Pets and Drinks

The walk runs rain or shine. The operator says it will contact guests about rescheduling only in severe or dangerous weather, and the listing separately reserves the right to cancel for bad weather or too few travelers.

The operator describes about a mile at a moderate pace through dimly lit historic areas and asks for comfortable walking shoes. Both the listing and the operator's page mark the route wheelchair accessible. The operator welcomes well-behaved, leashed pets, while the listing mentions service animals. Guests may not bring their own alcoholic drinks.

The guide meets the group under the clock tower at the corner of Travis Street and Congress Street. The City of Houston's Houston Historic Walk names it the Louis and Annie Friedman Clock Tower, a 65-foot tower built in 1996 to house the clock first bought for the 1904 City Hall. The operator's page gives the address as 301 Travis Street and suggests arriving 10 to 15 minutes early to find parking. Cancel at least 24 hours before the 9:00 PM start for a full refund; inside 24 hours, nothing comes back. The listing ends the night at the Alley Theatre.
