San Diego - La Jolla Underwater Park
4.7 (313)park
A protected coastal sanctuary where snorkelers and kayakers drift past kelp forests, sea caves, and leopard sharks.
Description

Established by the City of San Diego in 1970, the 6,000-acre park is divided into an Ecological Reserve (Matlahuayl State Marine Reserve) and a Marine Life Refuge. Its waters cover the Scripps and La Jolla submarine canyons alongside rocky reefs and sand flats, with visibility reaching up to 30 feet for scuba diving and paddleboarding. Encounters with orange Garibaldi, green sea turtles, harbor seals, and sea lions also extend out of the water, observable from land-based vantage points like Coast Walk Trail and La Jolla Cove.
