Description

Across roughly 2,620 acres of land and water, the refuge is divided into two distinct sections: Sweetwater Marsh and South San Diego Bay. These areas safeguard remnants of the shoreline habitats that once dominated the region, providing living space for migratory and native wildlife, including the California least tern and light-footed Ridgway's rail.
