Description

Tucked into the capital's civic fabric rather than the National Mall, the memorial occupies a small triangular reservation where Massachusetts Avenue meets 10th and L Streets NW. Sculptor Robert Ingersoll Aitken centered the Beaux-Arts ensemble on a seated Gompers with papers resting on his lap, surrounded by figures representing justice, education, cooperation, and the protection of home and family. Inscriptions drawn from Gompers's own words reinforce the setting, highlighting his focus on collective bargaining and voluntary association rather than revolutionary politics.
