Salt Creek Woods Nature Preserve
4.7 (197)park
Quiet dirt trails trace glacial ridges and remnant oak savannas along this 245-acre creek woodland.
Description

Shaped by the Tinley Ground Moraine—glacial deposits of rock and soil—the terrain rolls gently alongside the bends of Salt Creek. While oak-hickory woodland and floodplain forest cover most of the preserve, smaller ecological pockets break up the canopy: marsh and sedge meadow shelter local wildlife, and a small prairie opening on the northern border recalls the open landscape predating European settlement. Dedicated as an Illinois Nature Preserve in 1965, it draws hikers looking for quiet footpaths and unhurried wildlife watching.
