Salem by Daylight: Pirates, Puritans, Witchcraft and War
Black Cat's afternoon walk sets the ghost stories aside for Salem's port, its 1692 trials and the writers it hosted.
Salem Black Cat Tours lists its night ghost walk as its most popular tour. This is the daytime one, which the company describes as a story of pirates and Puritans, witchcraft and war, and files with its pure historic tours.
The listing sketches the arc: a settlement founded on the idea of peace for all, the witch trials of 1692, the rise of one of America's biggest shipping ports, and the famous authors the city hosted. There is no script, and the operator says each tour can be steered toward a group's own interests. Bring the question you came to Salem with.

One departure a day, at 2:00 PM. Booked here, a full refund holds until 24 hours before the start. The operator's own direct-booking terms ask for 48 hours.

The booking page lists no stops, only a meeting point. The operator's own booking system fills in the shape: the tour enters old burial grounds, takes in architecture from the past three centuries, and reaches the waterfront that once traded with the far ports of the East. Its listing photos show the Salem Witch Trials Memorial and the head guide, Daniel, on Derby Wharf.
Read those as likely stops. The walk is unscripted and none of them is guaranteed. The ground covered is about a mile on the listing's count and under a mile by the operator's.
What to Do With the Hour After

The walk starts at 2:00 PM and the listing puts it at 90 to 105 minutes. That leaves a short window before the historic sites close. Derby Wharf and the park grounds around its historic buildings stay open around the clock. The Custom House opens Wednesday to Sunday, 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM, through November 14, and the park's buildings are free.
In October, Charter Street Cemetery takes visitors by free reservation for the day of the visit, in 15-minute slots, and closes at 5:00 PM. The cemetery says anyone who charges you to visit it is not affiliated with the City of Salem. The Witch Trials Memorial is just around the corner and open dawn to dusk. The operator asks guests to keep video of its guides short and invites them back to any stop afterward for longer recordings.
Coming in October
Checked on October 12, the booking calendar showed the 2:00 PM walk on Fridays through Mondays up to October 26, then October 30 to November 1, and November 7 and 8. Tuesdays to Thursdays had none. The operator warns that October weekend tours move more slowly, with many more groups out. A traveler on an October tour in 2022 wrote that the guide "was easy to hear even with all the noise and people."
The city asks October visitors not to drive into downtown, especially on weekends. Its suggestions are the commuter rail, about 30 minutes from Boston's North Station, the Salem Ferry, or free weekend parking at 108 Jefferson Avenue, a five-minute walk from downtown. Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, and downtown streets close to all traffic by noon, two hours before this walk starts.
Ages, Group Size and Access
This listing sells adult tickets from age 13 and child tickets for ages 7 to 12, and children need an adult with them. There is no ticket for children under 7 on this booking page. The operator's own system prices children from age 6.
One booking takes up to 15 travelers. Salem licenses every paid guide, and since 2025 each license caps a tour at 10, 29 or 40 participants, not counting the guide, with a city decal or placard on the guide's badge showing the tour size. The operator says all its guides are city-licensed and mentions a city regulated limit without naming its tier.
The listing ticks wheelchair accessible and, in the same list, asks for at least a moderate level of fitness. The operator's note on the listing asks guests with physical disabilities to contact it before the tour. Tours go out rain or shine, with umbrellas on hand for guests. Tips are not included.
📍 Check in at the Black Cat Curiosity Shoppe, 234 Essex Street, about 15 minutes early. Other tour groups pass through this corner. Check in at the shop before you join anyone. Your guide gathers the group across the street in Lappin Park, by the bronze Samantha statue from Bewitched.
