Sail a Catamaran Under the Golden Gate in Ninety Minutes

A sailing catamaran leaves Pier 39, crosses under the bridge, rounds Alcatraz, and has you back at the dock in ninety minutes.

Sail under the Golden Gate from Pier 39.

Gate J sits on the far side of Pier 39, past the shops, right beside the floating docks where the sea lions haul out. That is where this catamaran loads. Check-in opens thirty minutes before the departure time printed on your ticket, and the sail itself runs ninety minutes from the dock and back to it. Departures run from 12:00 PM through 4:30 PM.

The boat is a sailing catamaran with a covered cabin, an open rear deck, and mesh trampolines slung between the hulls at the bow. Up to forty-two people share a scheduled departure. Handheld audio guides come in eight languages, though you have to bring your own headphones to use one.

Under the Bridge, Then Around the Rock

The route runs out toward the Golden Gate and passes directly underneath the bridge deck, then comes back around Alcatraz Island and along the city skyline. Sausalito is on the Marin side across the water. The wildlife list runs pelicans, sea lions, dolphins, and, occasionally, a whale.

Three Places to Sit, Three Different Trips

The covered cabin has windows and shelter. The open rear deck puts you in the wind with a clear line to the rail. The trampolines at the bow are mesh panels strung between the hulls, low enough that spray reaches them. Bring a jacket and wear soft-soled shoes; the operator asks for both.

Getting Aboard, and What the Bar Takes

Check-in is at Gate J. Enter through the main Pier 39 entrance, then walk out to the left between the shops toward the water; the gate is beside the sea lion viewing area. Boarding involves three to four stairs. The boat takes manual wheelchairs only, and the restrooms are not ADA accessible. Infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller, service animals are allowed, and the sailing suits all fitness levels.

The bar on board sells snacks, beer, wine, and soft drinks, and takes cash or a card. Outside beverages are not allowed aboard.

The Months the Bay Does Not Hold Still

The operator flags March, April, and November as unpredictable, with sailings in those months subject to cancellation or rescheduling. Wind is what moves this boat. A full refund requires cancelling at least twenty-four hours before the scheduled departure time.

The last departure leaves at 4:30 PM and is back at the dock ninety minutes later, which leaves the evening open on a pier already full of places to eat. The sea lions are usually still out on the floats when you walk back past Gate J.
