Rushmore in Morning Light, Supper on a Dances with Wolves Set

A guided Black Hills bus day that puts Mount Rushmore first for the light and ends at a chuckwagon table.

Plan Rushmore at dawn and supper on a film set.

The bus leaves Fort Hays at nine in the morning and goes straight to Mount Rushmore. That order is deliberate. Gutzon Borglum carved the four faces looking east, into the morning sun, and the operator's own itinerary puts the stop first for exactly that reason. You get your hour at the carving while the light is still coming at it head-on. What follows is a hundred miles of Black Hills National Forest, a second mountain carving still under construction, and a log-hall supper with a live band at the end of it.

Check-in opens at 7:30 in the morning at the Fort Hays headquarters building, where the day's paper tickets are handed out: breakfast, bus assignment, and the seat you will sit in for the supper show that night. The cowboy breakfast is served before the bus leaves, so the first meal of the day happens before any of the driving does. Mount Rushmore Tours has run this route since 1973 and has been second-generation family owned and operated since 2023.

An Hour at Rushmore, Then Three Tunnels That Frame It

The itinerary gives Mount Rushmore a little over an hour and leaves how you spend it to you. Afterward the route picks up Iron Mountain Road, seventeen miles of two-lane with three one-lane tunnels cut through granite. Each tunnel is aligned so the carving sits framed inside the opening as you come through. Later in the day the bus turns onto the Needles Highway, fourteen miles of spires and switchbacks, and threads the Needles Eye Tunnel with inches of clearance on either side. A rest stop at Sylvan Lake follows, twenty minutes at a lake the operator calls the crown jewel of Custer State Park.

Supper Is Served on a Set They Never Tore Down

The day ends where it started. Fort Hays is the standing set built for Dances with Wolves, and the venue keeps film-set structures and original props on the grounds. The chuckwagon supper comes out on tin plates, and the seat you take was assigned to you at check-in that morning. After the plates clear, a Branson-style variety show runs on the hall's stage. The itinerary allots two hours to the supper and the show together, which makes it the longest single stop of the nine.

Two Meals Are Included. The Middle One Is Not.

The package covers breakfast and the chuckwagon supper, along with admission to the stops that charge it. Lunch is the exception: the bus stops at the Game Lodge inside Custer State Park, and that meal comes out of your own pocket. The lodge served as Calvin Coolidge's summer White House, which is the kind of detail a guide hands you while you are deciding what to order. On fares, the booking system lists adults and seniors at the same price, and children from two through twelve at exactly half of it. Infants under two are not booked as travelers at all; they ride on an adult's lap.

What Nine Hours Ask of You

The listing grades the day as suitable for all fitness levels, and the walking is whatever you choose to do at each stop. Mount Rushmore Tours says it can store wheelchairs and scooters under the bus and will help travelers who need a hand, and it asks you to call ahead so the crew knows. Strollers are allowed, the coach is air conditioned, and there is a restroom on board. Service animals are welcome. The season runs from mid-May through October, which is the window in which this tour exists at all.

The tour starts and ends at Fort Hays Chuckwagon Supper & Show on Highway 16, about twelve minutes south of downtown Rapid City on the road toward Mount Rushmore. Check in at the headquarters building to collect the day's tickets. Booking confirms instantly, and the listing refunds in full on cancellations made at least twenty-four hours before departure. Mount Rushmore Tours asks for forty-eight hours on its own site; the window you get depends on where you booked. Nine hours is the commitment, and the last two of them are spent at a table. The operator's own packing note is short: comfortable shoes, sunscreen, a hat, a camera, and a phone charger.
