Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and Three Hours That Follow Your Lead

A private Black Hills day where the three guides are the family that owns the company.

Plan a Rushmore and Crazy Horse day at your pace.

Two carved mountains anchor the Black Hills, and a tour that lists both tends to become a day about stone. GeoFunTrek's own itinerary splits the time another way. Mount Rushmore takes ninety minutes. Crazy Horse takes ninety. Custer State Park takes three hours.

The longest block of this day holds no carving at all.

Those park hours are also the steerable ones. The itinerary calls for frequent stops at sites of your choosing, short hikes, and lodges or visitor facilities you can walk into or drive past.

Every departure is private, covering your group alone with no additional guests added. The listing carries a rating just under five stars across 217 reviews.

Ninety Minutes at Rushmore, Three Stops in Season

The guided time at Rushmore covers three stops: the Sculptor's Studio, the Presidential Trail and the Visitor Center. The studio holds the working models and the tools that shaped the mountain, and the Park Service closes it from October 1 to May 22. A booking inside that window gets the other two.

The itinerary promises commentary. It promises no line skipping and no private entry.

The trail is surfaced for wheelchairs as far as the viewing areas under the carving, two tenths of a mile in. The 422 stairs come after that, on the stretch running out to the studio. Ninety minutes covers the stops at a walking pace.

At Crazy Horse, the Guide Is the Whole Product

The second ninety minutes goes to Crazy Horse. The brief is narrower than at Rushmore: one local guide, the history of the warrior, and the history of the memorial itself.

GeoFunTrek states it runs no seasonal guides, part-time guides or trainees.

The roster is Cindy, Christopher and John Esposti. Entry terms at the memorial sit outside this listing, which covers commentary and transport here.

Seventy-One Thousand Acres, Stops of Your Choosing

Custer State Park takes the largest block of the day. The itinerary names three drives inside it: the Needles Highway, Iron Mountain Road and the Wildlife Loop Road. The park runs seventy-one thousand acres.

Frequent stops are written into the itinerary, and the sites are yours to pick.

Two of those drives keep their own calendar. The park closes the Needles Highway to vehicles with the first snow of the season and does not reopen it until April 1 or later, and Iron Mountain Road shuts periodically through the winter depending on how fast it can be cleared. The Wildlife Loop Road is the one open all year, and the park counts 1,350 free-roaming buffalo along it, with prairie dogs and a band of feral burros. Early morning and the hour before sunset are when the park says to look.

Short hikes are on the table. The lodges and visitor facilities are there to walk into or leave alone. Wildlife keeps its own schedule, and no itinerary can promise it.

Pickup at Your Door, and Nine Seats to Fill

Pickup and drop-off cover lodging in the Keystone, Rapid City and Hill City areas, and the listing counts campgrounds, bed and breakfasts and vacation rentals among them. Guests staying further out are asked to raise it in advance.

There is no meeting point to find and no parking to sort out.

Vehicles are SUVs, with a van rented when a group runs larger, and seats cap at nine. One adult has to accompany children, and the booking requires an adult on it. Children three and under ride free in a seat of their own, and their car seats come from the family.

The listing calls the tour wheelchair accessible and suitable for all physical fitness levels, and it also states there is no wheelchair lift on the vehicles. A folding wheelchair fits. The guest needs to enter and exit on their own, with the guides assisting and pushing. Prams and strollers work for small children, and service animals are allowed.

Cancelling at least twenty-four hours before the scheduled departure returns the full amount, and nothing is refundable inside that window. Bad weather can cancel a departure. A private booking will not be cancelled for want of other travelers.

Confirmation is instant, the ticket stays on your phone, and tours run in English. The listing names bottled water and snacks as what rides along, and lunch as what does not. It does not itemize admission or entry terms for the three sites.

Eight to nine hours after the pickup you are back at the same door, with the afternoon's stops picked by the people who were in the car.
