Ride Up to the Grove Park Inn Without the Sweat

Asheville sits in a bowl of hills, and that is the reason most visitors see downtown on foot and stop there. A pedal-assist motor changes the arithmetic. In three hours the route takes in the Grove Arcade, the Basilica of St. Lawrence, the Victorian streets of Montford, and a terrace at the Grove Park Inn where the Blue Ridge fills the horizon.

Pedal up to the Grove Park Inn by e-bike.

The Flying Bike runs this ride out of a shop at 280 Lyman Street, in the River Arts District. Everyone meets there. You select a bike, get a helmet, and ride a practice lap with the group before anyone leaves the lot.

A training and practice session runs at the start of every tour, so no previous e-bike experience is assumed. What the motor is actually for becomes clear on the first climb.

Tours run Wednesday through Monday, with no Tuesday departures. Most of those days have two, one in the morning and one in the early afternoon. Booking closes twenty-four hours before the ride, and confirmation is immediate.

Who Rides Their Own Bike, and Who Rides Along

The legal minimum for operating an electric bike is sixteen, and guides can ask any rider for proof of age. The suggested minimum height for your own bike is five feet. Anyone shorter, or anyone who would rather not balance a fifty-five-pound frame, rides as a passenger instead, and the operator will arrange a seat on the back of a stretch cargo bike driven by someone else in the party.

The tiers run like this:

  • Riders sixteen and over take their own e-bike
  • Passengers eight and over ride on the back of an electric cargo bike
  • Younger children, from age one, ride in a fitted child seat rated to forty-eight and a half pounds, and those parties are asked to arrive early so the bikes can be set up

One booking takes up to eight riders. Helmets stay on for the whole ride, and the Pedego Boomerang is rated to three hundred and fifty pounds.

The Loop: Downtown, Montford, and the Long Climb

The route leaves the river flats for downtown first. The Grove Arcade comes early, then the Basilica of St. Lawrence, where the guide tells the story of its construction and the builder behind it. From there the group turns north into Montford, a neighborhood of Victorian houses, and picks up the Reed Creek Greenway, a bike-only path that climbs steadily away from the center.

The greenway ends at the Omni Grove Park Inn. Twenty-five minutes is set aside there, the longest stop on the route, and it is the one the climb pays for. From the Sunset Terrace the downtown skyline sits in front of the Blue Ridge. The ride back down is the easy part, with a last stop at Pack Square before the group returns to the shop.

The operator puts the full loop at fourteen miles. Of the three hours, about sixty-five minutes are spent stopped.

Departure Days, Weather, and the Refund Window

The booking calendar never shows a Tuesday departure. The other six days carry two slots, and the pair shifts an hour later once the clocks change in November.

Two numbers govern cancellation, and they are not the same number. A full refund is set at twenty-four hours before departure at checkout. The operator's own published policy asks for forty-eight. Cancel at least forty-eight hours out and you are clear under both.

Weather gets handled case by case. Light rain in the forecast with none falling at the start means the group decides together whether to ride, with ponchos and rain covers for the bags. If conditions are bad enough to call it off, the guide phones at least an hour before the start time, and you choose between another date and a full refund.

What to Bring, and Where to Leave the Car

Parking is on site. The shop sits at the Hi-Wire River Arts District beer garden, and you can take any open spot in the paved or gravel lot.

Come in comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes. The ride covers the bike, a helmet, gloves, scarves and a rear cargo bag, plus rain covers and ponchos when the sky calls for them. Bring water, sunglasses, sunscreen and a light layer. Gratuities are not included.

Two more things worth knowing before you book. Pets cannot come along. The guiding is in English only.

Check in fifteen minutes ahead of the departure time. That quarter hour covers selecting a bike, fitting a helmet and riding the practice lap, and the group rolls out once it is done. The first climb comes soon after, and somewhere on the way up you stop thinking about the hill at all.
