Free Pumpkins on Governors Island, Then Dinner at Fraunces Tavern
A morning ferry for Governors Island's free pumpkin patch, followed by warm cider and dinner inside Manhattan's oldest tavern.
🗺️ One harbor crossing, two stops
🎃 Stop 1 · Pumpkin Point in Nolan Park
Nolan Park sits a quick three-minute walk from the ferry dock, bordered by yellow clapboard houses and century-old trees. For this single weekend, thousands of pumpkins cover the lawn while live acoustic music plays and local food stands sell warm cider and cider donuts. Take a loop around Colonels Row's red-brick officers' quarters before settling onto the grass.
Pumpkin Point 2026 runs Saturday, October 24 and Sunday, October 25, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, rain or shine. Admission is free, with pumpkins limited to one per person per household while supplies last (bring a sturdy tote bag from home). Details at govisland.com/events/pumpkin-point-2026.

🍲 Stop 2 · Fraunces Tavern
A five-minute walk from the ferry slip trades the harbor wind for candlelit brick and dark timber. Washington bid farewell to his officers upstairs in 1783—now a quiet museum—while the bustling tavern below pours cider and ale. After an afternoon outdoors, a hot chicken pot pie here feels well-earned.
Dinner runs 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM in the dining rooms, while the bars pour late into the night. Reserve ahead for a dining table, or grab a walk-in stool at the Independence Bar.

⛴️ How the day flows
Head over on the weekend before 11:00 AM, when Governors Island ferries are free round-trip. Standard adult round-trip tickets are five dollars, while children 12 and under ride free at all times. Boats depart from the Battery Maritime Building at 10 South Street typically every 30 minutes, stepping up to every 15 minutes during peak hours (check govisland.com/ferry). Catch a boat back around 4:00 PM—well ahead of the 6:00 PM island close—to land in Lower Manhattan just as tavern dinner service begins.
