Ride the Coast From Palos Verdes to Huntington Pier

A guide leads the line out past the breakwater and down the open coast toward Huntington Pier. The ski, the wetsuit, the fuel and the photos afterward are all part of one price. Sightings are the coast's business, not the operator's promise.

Ride a jet ski from Palos Verdes to Huntington Pier.

The marina sits behind Hotel Maya, on the water side of Queensway Drive, where the harbor is flat and the traffic is slow. That is where the line forms and where the briefing happens.

Past the breakwater the surface changes, and the rest of the two hours is open coast. The operator describes the run as the coastline from Palos Verdes to Huntington Pier, with Long Beach sitting in the middle of it. A guide rides at the front and the group follows.

Two departures run, one at ten in the morning and one at half past one. Both are guided, and both put two hours under you on the water.

The operator counts the whole activity at three hours, with two of them riding, so block three rather than two.

Twelve is the floor. Nobody under twelve rides, as a driver or as a passenger.

What Shares the Water With You

The operator's own pitch for this run is dolphins, and it does not hedge. It says the coastal tour drops riders into the middle of Pacific dolphin pods, and it repeats that on its own site rather than only in the listing.

Whales are the seasonal one. The operator puts the migration in spring and fall, and says this two-hour coastal run rides through the middle of that path.

Sea lions turn up on the channel buoys inside the harbor. The operator's own photographs from this run show riders idling a few feet off a buoy with the animals stacked on it.

None of it is on a schedule. A guided route can put you where the animals usually are. That is the whole of what it can do.

The Harbor Before the Open Coast

The first stretch is harbor water. The Queen Mary sits on her permanent moorings across the channel from the marina, and the operator's photographs from this run show riders passing under that black hull on the way out. Her scale only reads properly from the water. Container cranes stack up behind her at the port.

Past the breakwater the chop starts, and that is where the two hours really open up.

The coastline the operator names runs from the Palos Verdes bluffs at one end to Huntington Pier at the other, with Long Beach in the middle. Staying close to shore is the point. This is not a crossing.

What Comes With the Ski

The operator prices this as one all-inclusive number and lists what that covers: the jetski, fuel, a wetsuit, safety equipment, guides, and the pictures and video from the day.

The wetsuit is the item the booking page leaves off its own inclusions list, and in Pacific water it is the one you would otherwise have to solve yourself.

Photos reach you after the fact rather than at the dock. The listing puts that at forty-eight hours.

One thing sits outside the price, and the operator says so plainly on its pricing page: gratuity for the guides is not included.

A ski seats two. The booking form sells a youth seat for ages twelve to seventeen alongside the adult seat, so the second rider can be a kid who has cleared twelve.

Who Can Ride, and What Is Final

Twelve is the hard floor, for drivers and passengers alike. At the other end, the booking form's adult band runs eighteen to seventy, and that is the range it sells.

The health notes are worth reading as written rather than skimmed. The listing advises against the ride for anyone with a spinal injury, anyone pregnant, and anyone with poor cardiovascular health. The same listing also ticks "suitable for all physical fitness levels", which cannot be true at the same time as the three lines above it. Take the specific warnings over the checkbox.

Then the part that costs money if you get it wrong. Booked through this listing the sale is final: no refund and no credit for a cancellation. That is a heavier condition than a two-hour booking usually carries, and it is worth knowing before the card goes through rather than after.

The marina is behind Hotel Maya at 700 Queensway Drive. The operator's directions are specific: pull into the hotel lot, park between buildings three and four, walk through the gap, turn right at the sidewalk, and follow the water past the pool until the docks are in front of you.

Reservations are required, and the operator states that on its own pricing page. The morning group generally gets the flatter water; the half-past-one group rides into more wind. Organise ten or more paying riders and the operator gives the coordinator a free seat on any of its guided tours.

Two hours later you are back at the same dock with salt in your hair and the photographs still to come.
