Ride the Badlands Loop, Then Five-Cent Coffee at Wall Drug
A guide drives you from Rapid City past a Cold War missile silo, around the Badlands Loop and home through Wall Drug.
Black Hills Open-Top-Tours runs this day out of Rapid City, and despite the company name, the Badlands leg happens under a roof. The owner explained why in a 2022 reply to a traveler: the company began with convertible vans and Jeeps, found neither suited to Badlands July heat of 95 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit and up, and moved this tour into a Ford Transit van and a Honda Odyssey minivan with cold air conditioning and big windows. Plan on a closed van with wide windows; the open tops stay in the Black Hills.
Departures leave at 8:00 AM or 9:00 AM, and the listing puts the whole day at seven hours. The listing counts two of those hours as the drive out and back.

Lunch is a picnic of subs and fixings, and the listing says you may bring your own food and drinks instead. Hotel pickup, water, snacks and park entry are in the price. The tip is not.
Badlands Premium Hard Top Van Tour - PublicSeven hours from Rapid City with hotel pickup, a picnic lunch and Badlands park entry included.www.viator.comThe Missile Field Comes Before the Park

The first two stops date from the Cold War. Delta-09 is a silo that held a live Minuteman missile from 1963 until the early 1990s. Its door has been welded and fitted with a glass roof, and you look down an 80-foot shaft at an unarmed missile. The Minuteman Missile National Historic Site visitor center nearby tells the story of the 1,000 missiles once kept on alert across the Great Plains, 150 of them in western South Dakota.
The listing calls both stops an option, and the calendar decides it. Through May 17, 2027, the park service keeps Delta-09 closed on Sundays and Mondays and open 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM on other days. Its visitor center runs the same winter schedule, Tuesday to Saturday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and the listing adds its own note that the visitor center stop has no tours Sunday through Tuesday. If the silo is why you are booking, choose a Wednesday through Saturday, the days both sources leave open. Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day are the exceptions: the park service closes the silo, its visitor center and the Ben Reifel Visitor Center on all three.
The Loop Road, the Door Trail and a Fossil Boardwalk

Inside Badlands National Park the van follows the Badlands Loop Road, SD 240, through the North Unit. The listing gives that stretch ninety minutes, with stops at the overlooks the guide picks. Three named stops follow. The Door Trail starts as a quarter-mile boardwalk through a break in the Badlands Wall. Past its end the route carries on over bare rock marked by yellow posts, and the park service says travel beyond the boardwalk is at your own risk, with drop-offs to watch for. The Ben Reifel Visitor Center has rangers and museum exhibits and keeps winter hours of 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The Fossil Preparation Lab the listing mentions inside it opens only from the second week of June to the third week of September. The Fossil Exhibit Trail is a boardwalk lined with fossil replicas, and the listing says the exhibits are there to be touched.
The listing calls Pinnacles Overlook a popular gathering spot for bighorn sheep, with lambs on the slopes in late April and early May. Badlands is not one of the eleven national parks that charge non-US residents an extra USD 100, and park entry is already in this tour's price.
Wall Drug Poured Coffee for the Missile Crews
The last stop is Wall Drug, with thirty minutes in the listing. The Hustead family bought the store in 1931 and put up their first free ice water signs in the summer of 1936. The water is still free, and the restaurant still lists five-cent coffee next to homemade donuts. Its own history page ties back to the morning: when the Air Force ran the Minuteman silos east of Wall, the Hustead family gave free coffee and donuts to crews driving to and from Ellsworth Air Force Base, and it still treats service members the same way.
Who Else Rides, and What One Seat Costs
The name says Public, but the one option on the booking page is labeled Private Tour. Travelers who booked it as a shared tour have more than once ended up as the only party aboard. Prices drop as your party grows: as of October 15, 2026, the booking calendar showed one adult alone at USD 799, two adults at USD 449 each, and three or four adults at USD 359 each. Youth 11 to 17 were USD 139, children 5 to 10 were USD 69, and children four and under rode free. The listing lets the operator cancel a departure if too few travelers sign up.
The listing ticks wheelchair access. The owner wrote in 2022 that a Sprinter van with a power wheelchair lift serves guests with limited mobility, while the usual Badlands vans are the Transit and the minivan, so ask for the lift van in the special requirements box when you book. The listing calls the Door Trail and the Fossil Exhibit Trail accessible boardwalks. The park service is more exact: the Fossil Exhibit Trail is a full boardwalk, while only the first section of the Door Trail is accessible to wheelchair users.
📍 Pickup covers a list of Rapid City hotels, and the fixed start is the lobby front door of the Travelodge by Wyndham at 2505 Mount Rushmore Road. Give your hotel's exact name and street when you book, since one traveler found several Best Western Rushmore hotels in town. The operator asks guests to call at least 48 hours ahead to confirm, and guides phone the evening before with their cell number. Bookings close eight hours before departure, and canceling at least 24 hours ahead gets a full refund. The tour runs in all weather, so dress for the day. The park service warns that in winter or extreme weather, roads through the Badlands may be closed.
On the drive home the Black Hills stand on the western horizon, and the prairie grassland runs off to the east.
