Ride From Haight-Ashbury Onto the Golden Gate Bridge and Back

A pedal-assist loop from the Haight through Golden Gate Park and the Presidio, onto the bridge, then back past the Painted Ladies.

Bike from Haight-Ashbury across the Golden Gate.

Dandyhorse starts this ride at its own shop on Shrader Street in Haight-Ashbury, a block from Golden Gate Park. The loop covers about 16 miles in roughly three and a half hours. It runs through the Haight, along the car-free JFK Promenade, past Ocean Beach without stopping, and up through the Presidio to about forty minutes on the bridge's bicycle sidewalk.

The return drops beneath the bridge at Fort Point, follows the Crissy Field path, stops for a pastry in Pacific Heights and swings past the Painted Ladies. A wireless headset carries the guide's voice the whole way.

The booking covers a pedal-assist e-bike fitted to you, a MIPS-certified helmet, the guide, the headset, a fitting and safety briefing before you roll, and the bakery pastry. Recent riders describe that pastry as a donut. Tips, hotel pickup and any other food or drink are on you.

The listing caps a departure at nine riders, and the operator's own tour page says eight. Either way, the group stays under ten.

Which Side of the Bridge You Ride

The bridge district decides which sidewalk bikes use, and it changes by day and hour. On weekdays, bikes ride the east sidewalk until 3:30 PM. That is the side facing San Francisco, shared with people on foot. After 3:30 PM, bikes move to the west sidewalk. On weekends and holidays bikes use the west side, and in daylight-saving months the east side opens to them as well. The listing puts it simply: the views vary with whichever sidewalk is open.

Bikes are held to 15 mph on the sidewalks, must slow to 5 mph around the towers, and yield to pedestrians. While the listing summary mentions crossing the bridge, the operator's actual route rides out onto the span and turns back toward the city. Riding all the way across into Sausalito is a separate Dandyhorse tour.

Bike Handling Matters More Than Fitness

The listing calls this ride suitable for all fitness levels, and the pedal assist handles the hills. The real requirement sits a line lower: every rider must already know how to ride a standard bicycle. E-bike experience is not needed. Staff fit the bike and explain the controls at check-in.

The operator's FAQ describes the bar as basic cycling confidence, comfortable on city streets including some hills, and suggests practicing first if you have not ridden in a while. Recent riders back both halves. Several say the hills stopped mattering on the e-bike, and one first-time e-bike rider found tight turns took some getting used to. The listing says nearly the whole route follows official bike routes, car-free streets and quiet back streets.

Morning All Year, Afternoon in Daylight-Saving Months

The 10:00 AM start runs all year and, by the operator's estimate, finishes around 1:30 PM. The 2:30 PM start runs only while daylight saving time is in effect, roughly mid-March to early November, and the booking calendar shows the exact dates. The route and everything included stay the same at either hour.

Bad weather can cancel a departure, though the operator notes light rain or fog alone will not. Even on clear days, riders consistently point to the bridge as the coldest stretch: one rider in July advised heavy clothing for the Golden Gate, and another wrote that even in August hats and jackets were welcome against the wind. The operator asks for closed-toe shoes and layers.

Who Can Ride

Riders must be at least 12 years old and at least 4 ft 10 in tall. Anyone under 18 must ride with a booked parent or legal guardian, who signs the waiver and stays with the group.

Minimum numbers apply. If a departure does not fill, it can be cancelled after you hold a confirmation, and you are offered another option or a full refund. Cancel at least 24 hours before the start for a full refund. Inside 24 hours, the booking is not refundable.

📍 Check in at Dandyhorse, 618 Shrader Street, 15 minutes before the start for the waiver, bike fitting and safety briefing. The 7 Haight/Noriega bus stops a block away, and the N-Judah stops at Cole and Carl.

Street parking nearby is limited to two hours, which is shorter than the ride. The operator points drivers to the city-run Kezar Lot at 825 Stanyan Street, a few minutes' walk away, where SFMTA charges $5 an hour, or $20 for three to four hours. If you are running late, call the shop; departures leave promptly.

The loop finishes back on Shrader Street, a block from the park, with the Haight's Victorian streets and shops right outside the door.
