Ride a Glowing Fish Through The Battery's Nautilus Carousel

Spin inside a lit fiberglass fish on a carousel with no center pole, then wander the harbor gardens around it.

Look for the glass nautilus shell.

🐟 Thirty Fish, One Spiral

At the southern tip of Manhattan, a spiral of curved glass and steel rises out of the gardens of The Battery. Inside sits the SeaGlass Carousel, shaped after a chambered nautilus and built as a nod to the New York Aquarium, which opened on this ground in 1896.

Riders climb into one of 30 fiberglass fish instead of onto a horse. Each fish glows from within with color changing LED light and carries its own sound system. The whole ride turns on four turntables with no center pole, and the fish rise, dip, and swirl past one another like a school in open water.

Step back outside and the rest of the 25 acre park opens up, with perennial gardens designed by Piet Oudolf, an urban farm, broad lawns, and bike paths running along the harbor. Park entry is free, and the grounds stay open from 6:00 AM to 1:00 AM daily.

The carousel entrance sits across from 17 State Street.
