Reserve the Beach Boat, Then Read the Fine Print

Read it once more, dear. The truth is in the second pass.

Rockaway Reserve is useful because it says the quiet part out loud: on summer weekends, the beach boat is not a casual thought. It is a capacity problem with sunscreen on it.

From May 23 through September 13, 2026, NYC Ferry is selling Rockaway Reserve tickets for selected weekend and holiday Rockaway-Soundview departures. The ticket costs 12 dollars. It can be bought up to two weeks ahead in the NYC Ferry app, pending availability. It is meant to do one job: guarantee a spot on the scheduled departure you chose, at the landing you chose, if you are in the correct Reserve line at least ten minutes before departure.

That last sentence is the article.

Reserve does not mean arrive when you feel ready. Reserve does not mean a particular seat. Reserve does not mean round trip. Reserve does not mean a weather refund because the sky changed its mind after your friends finally agreed on a beach day.

It means a spot on one selected ferry departure, with conditions attached.

That can be exactly what you need. It can also be the most expensive way to learn that a beach day has two commutes.

Ask these before you tap purchase.

First: which landing are you actually using?

For 2026, Reserve tickets are offered only at Wall Street/Pier 11 and Rockaway. Morning Reserve tickets apply to Wall Street/Pier 11 departures toward Rockaway between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on weekends and select holidays. Evening Reserve tickets apply to Rockaway departures back toward Brooklyn, Manhattan, and the Bronx between 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

If you are boarding from another landing, the Reserve product is not your shortcut. Some capacity is being held open along the route so regular-fare riders can still board at those landings, but those riders board first-come, first-served.

Second: are you reserving the trip there, the trip back, or both?

A Rockaway Reserve ticket is one-way. If you want a guaranteed return, you need a separate return Reserve ticket for the correct Rockaway departure. If you only reserve the beach-bound trip, your return is still a line, a schedule, and a tired decision made with sand in your bag.

Third: can every person in your party behave like the ticket has a clock?

The whole party needs to be present. The app ticket must be shown in the app. Children under 44 inches ride free, but each child still needs a reserved zero-dollar child ticket added in advance if you want the Reserve guarantee. Bikes are allowed only with limited space, and a zero-dollar bicycle ticket must be reserved in advance.

Slow hands, clean copy. Most beach-day mistakes are hidden in the word "we."

The trip out gets all the optimism.

The return gets the wet towel, the hot shoulders, the phone battery at 18 percent, the person who did not eat enough, and the friend who says "whatever is easiest" while making nothing easier.

So plan backward.

If you know you need to be back in Manhattan by dinner, reserve the Rockaway departure first. The 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. return window is the relevant one. If you are looser, decide whether you are comfortable joining the regular line and accepting that the exact departure may not be yours.

The correct question is not "Can we get there?"

The correct question is "What happens when everyone wants to leave?"

This is where Reserve becomes less glamorous and more useful. It is not selling romance. It is selling a little less uncertainty at the point in the day when people become poor planners.

The Rockaway landing is at Beach 108th Street and Beach Channel Drive. The Rockaway Beach Boardwalk is a 5-to-10-minute walk from the landing. That sounds small until you add children, chairs, a cooler, humidity, and a person wearing shoes that were chosen by optimism.

NYC Ferry also operates free Rockaway shuttle buses east and west of the ferry landing. The Beach Guide lists service toward Jacob Riis Park and toward Beach 35th Street. On weekends, shuttle buses are expected to run approximately every half hour all day; on weekdays, service is more limited, before 10:00 a.m. and between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Capacity on the weekend shuttle buses is limited. The Beach Guide also points riders to the Q22 bus near Beach 108th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard as a practical backup.

This is the part beach plans like to skip. The ferry is not a magic carpet. It is a landing.

Use this before the app, not after.

• Check that the date is inside the 2026 Reserve season: weekends and select holidays from May 23 through September 13.

• Confirm the product: Reserve from Wall Street/Pier 11 or Rockaway; Rocket from Long Island City or Greenpoint; regular Rockaway-Soundview if you are staying flexible.

• Buy in the NYC Ferry app. Reserve tickets are not sold at ticket vending machines or the Pier 11 ticket booth.

• Buy up to two weeks in advance, or as late as 15 minutes before departure if still available.

• Add zero-dollar tickets for children under 44 inches if you need their Reserve guarantee.

• Add a zero-dollar bicycle ticket if you are bringing a bike, and remember that bike space is limited.

• Put everyone in the correct line at least ten minutes before departure.

• Buy the return separately if you need the return guaranteed.

• Keep a land-route backup: subway, bus, or the Q22 connection near the Rockaway landing.

• Accept the weather rule before you buy. Rain is not automatically a refund. Extreme weather cancellations by NYC Ferry trigger refunds for affected Reserve tickets.

Pass with checks.

Reserve if the boat removes the uncertainty that would otherwise ruin the day: a group, children, a fixed dinner time, a visitor who cannot stand in a long line, or a summer weekend when you already know the city will have the same idea.

Hold if you think the ticket turns the rest of the day into a solved problem.

Rockaway Reserve is not a beach plan. It is one corrected sentence inside a beach plan.

The better version reads like this: We know our landing. We know our ticket type. We know our return. We know the shuttle. We know the backup. We know the ten-minute rule.

Now you may bring the towel.
