Red Foul-Weather Gear, Twelve Seats, and the Golden Gate Overhead
A narrated ninety minutes under both bridges in an open twelve-seat inflatable, with the weather gear handed to you at the dock.
Most bay tours put a window between you and the water. Bay Voyager hands you a jacket. The boat is an open rigid inflatable working out of Pier 39, and the crew fits every passenger with foul weather gear before the lines come off.
Twelve seats is the whole boat. The captain narrating the route is close enough to take a question without a microphone. You ride low and in the open, and how wet that gets depends on the bay that afternoon.

Three departures run from Pier 39: 11:30 AM, 1:30 PM, and 4:30 PM. The late-morning slot is the one that starts at USD 115, and the two afternoon departures start at USD 120. Gratuities are not included.
San Francisco Bay Adventure Sightseeing CruiseNinety minutes from Pier 39 on a twelve-passenger rigid inflatable. Foul weather gear and live captain commentary included. From USD 115.www.viator.comThe Gear Is Part of the Ticket

The boat issues a West Marine jacket and Helly Hansen pants, and they are working equipment. San Francisco Bay runs cold and windy straight through the summer, and an open hull at speed manufactures its own wind on top of that. Dress in layers underneath and bring warm socks and gloves even when the city is hot. Sunglasses and lip balm earn their place too. Everyone is signed in, fitted with a life jacket, and walked through the safety rules at the dock before boarding.
What the boat does not carry:
- No restroom on board, so use the one on Pier 39 before you walk down
- No cabin and no shelter from spray, which is what the gear is for
Under Both Bridges, Then Back to the Sea Lions

The run works the cityfront in both directions, passes under the Golden Gate and under the Bay Bridge, and finishes back at Pier 39 alongside the sea lion floats. The captain's narration is the through-line. Seven stops on the route account for thirty-eight of the ninety minutes, and the rest is spent running between them.
Fort Point sits directly under the bridge's southern end, a Civil War fortification finished in 1861 that was never used to defend the bay. Mile Rocks Lighthouse, long since abandoned, marks the line where the bay ends and the Pacific starts. The Presidio, a military post established in 1776, holds the shore in between. Coit Tower passes without a stop.
Bay Voyager notes that the exact route varies with the tour package, the weather, and sea traffic.
Who It Suits, and the Three Groups It Does Not
Children ride from age five, a limit the operator repeats on its own site. An adult has to be on the booking with them. Physical fitness is otherwise not a barrier, and service animals are allowed.
The operator lists the trip as not recommended for travelers who are pregnant, who have spinal injuries, or who have poor cardiovascular health. A rigid inflatable at speed slams into chop, and that impact is the reason those three groups are named.
The twelve-seat limit applies to the shared boat itself. However the seats were sold, the group you sail with tops out at twelve, and a single reservation can take all of them.
Weather, Arrival, and the Refund Window
The boat operates in all weather conditions, and the gear is there so that a grey, blowing afternoon still works. Bay Voyager reserves the right to cancel for unsafe conditions, and issues a full refund when it does.
A booking made from the card above refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before departure. Inside that window the seat is yours whether you use it or not, and the boat will not wait:
- Arrive 30 minutes before departure for sign-in, gear, and the safety briefing
- Departures leave on time and do not hold for latecomers
- A missed departure is neither refunded nor rescheduled
The gate is Gate i, on the west side of Pier 39, down by the sea lion floats, and it is where the boat comes back in as well. Give yourself more time than the map suggests; the concourse walk runs long on a busy afternoon, and public transit stops nearby. Sign in, pull the red gear on over whatever you are already wearing, and take a seat. Ninety minutes later you are back at the same gate with salt on your sunglasses, the sea lions still arguing, and the underside of the Golden Gate in your camera roll.
