Portland's Ghosts, From Shanghai Tunnel Tales to Kells Irish Pub

An hour of Portland ghost lore told entirely from the sidewalk, with stops at the Shanghai Tunnels and even a parking lot.

This is a walking ghost tour told entirely outdoors. The guide meets the group at the Harlow Hotel on NW Glisan Street with a lantern and walks about a mile through Old Town to Kells Irish Pub on SW 2nd Avenue.

Booking here locks in a 6:00, 7:00, 8:00 or 9:00 PM start on the date you pick. The listing sells one per-person ticket for everyone aged one and up, and tips for the guide are not included.

Phantoms, Penance, and Poltergeists: Portland Ghost TourA one-hour evening ghost walk from the Harlow Hotel on NW Glisan Street to Kells Irish Pub on SW 2nd Avenue, with starts at 6:00, 7:00, 8:00 and 9:00 PM.www.viator.com

Every Stop Is Told From the Sidewalk

The listing names eight stops: the Harlow Hotel, Lan Su Chinese Garden, the Shanghai Tunnels, Old Town Pizza & Brewing on NW Davis Street, the Roseland Theater, The Benson, a parking lot at SW Pine Street and SW 2nd Avenue, and Kells. The operator's FAQ says its ghost tours do not go inside the buildings, and the listing excludes admission into buildings.

That includes the tunnels. The listing promises their secrets, and the walk delivers them as stories at street level. A traveler in August 2026 put it plainly: "You will be outside on sidewalks the entire tour." Two travelers in spring 2026 singled out the tunnel stories as the part that held them.

Old Town After Dark Walks With You

The stories run to crime and tragedy. A traveler in August 2026 warned that most of them carry graphic or violent details, while the operator's FAQ calls its ghost tours family-friendly and its Portland page says the walk aims for eerie over terrifying.

The streets are part of the night. Travelers from 2020 through 2026 wrote about traffic and music drowning out the guide, sidewalk power-washing outside the Roseland, and interruptions from people on the street, and some praised guides who handled them calmly. One booking holds up to thirty people, and the operator's own booking system caps a departure at thirty-five. The closer you stand to the lantern, the more you hear.

Kids, Dogs, Cameras and Wheels

The operator's FAQ welcomes children, and dogs that do not disrupt the tour; the listing itself mentions only service animals. Photos are welcome, but the operator asks guests not to film video, and drinking is not allowed on the walk.

The listing marks the route as wheelchair and stroller accessible, asks for a moderate level of fitness, and advises against it for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health. The operator's FAQ says not all of its tours are wheelchair accessible and asks guests to contact it to confirm a specific one. The pace is relaxed with frequent stops, by the operator's account, and a 2026 traveler wrote that the guide slowed the walks so a slow-walking husband could keep up.

The Hour Ends at Kells, Not at the Hotel

The listing budgets seven or eight minutes at each of the eight stops, which adds up to the advertised hour. Travelers in 2026 found that it can run long: one guide asked the group at the start for permission to go past the hour, and another stretched a walk to three hours.

The walk finishes at Kells Irish Pub on SW 2nd Avenue, not back at the Harlow. The operator also sells a half-hour extended loop that starts where the hour ends; this listing books the one-hour walk only. Two travelers in 2024 described walking back to their cars or the meeting point on their own after dark, one of them while the guide carried on with the extended group.

For the ride back, walk to the SW 6th & Pine MAX station and take the northbound Yellow Line two stops to Union Station/NW 6th & Hoyt, near the Harlow. TriMet's current timetable runs that train about every 15 minutes until around 10:45 PM and at least every half hour after that, past midnight. An adult fare is $2.80 and covers two and a half hours.

📍 Meet at the Harlow Hotel, 722 NW Glisan Street. The guide wears a black US Ghost Adventures T-shirt and carries a lantern. Arrive 15 minutes before your start. The listing calls it the Harlow Hotel & Cafe. The hotel's own site describes a café and lounge on its main floor with espresso late into the evening, and a traveler in May 2026 wrote that the group could have waited there rather than on the sidewalk.

The Union Station MAX stops at NW 6th & Hoyt and NW 5th & Glisan are the closest train stops. The hotel says it has street parking only; the city's Pearl District meters charge $3.20 an hour from 8 AM to 7 PM Monday through Saturday and from 1 PM to 7 PM on Sunday, unless signs say otherwise.

The walk runs rain or shine, and the operator says it will contact you if a tour is cancelled. Bring an umbrella or poncho, comfortable shoes and a way to tip; the operator accepts cash or apps such as Venmo and Apple Pay. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund; inside 24 hours there is none.

Lan Su Chinese Garden keeps fall and winter hours of 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with last entry at 4:00 PM, from mid-October into March, and stays open until 5:30 PM in spring and summer, so every departure passes it after the gates have shut. Go that afternoon, on the garden's own admission ticket, to see the courtyards the evening walk only stands outside.
