Description

The space was originally conceived under the names East River Drive Playground and F.D.R. Drive Playground. The site's layout is integrated with the East River Houses, a 12.5-acre complex designed by Voorhees, Walker, Foley, and Smith. The development represents one of the earliest public housing initiatives built after the 1936 founding of the New York City Housing Authority.
