Free Hoops by the Water, Wine When You're Done

Pier 2 is the kind of place that shouldn't be free, but somehow is. It's a run of sports courts hanging off Brooklyn Bridge Park, with the Manhattan skyline parked right across the river. Shoot hoops, skate the roller rink, or knock a ping pong ball around. Half of it sits under an old shed roof, so a gray sky isn't a dealbreaker. It's all free, no ticket, no sign-up, you just show up and play.

Saturn Road is what happens when two women from Texas open a coffee shop in 2024 and decide it should turn into a wine bar after dark. It's a five-minute walk inland on Court Street, and the backyard is the real reason to go, with outdoor movies some nights and live music on others. It's candlelit and easy to sink into, the kind of place you come in for one glass and leave two hours later. The hours move around with what's playing, so check before a late trip.

The two spots are five minutes apart, so it's easy to do both in one afternoon. If you're set on getting out on the water, book the free kayaking about two weeks ahead, since the slots go fast. The courts you can just walk up to. Go on a dry day if you can, since the rink and kayaking both depend on the weather. Head to Saturn Road late in the afternoon, right when it switches from coffee to wine.
