Phipps Street Burying Ground
4.6 (11)attraction
A 17th-century burying ground featuring original gravestone layouts and carvings by the Boston Carver.
Description

Designated by Charlestown's founding fathers just after settlement, this 17th-century site holds early burials including King Philip's War soldiers alongside national figures like John Harvard and Constitution signer Nathaniel Gorham. Unlike many New England burying grounds altered by nineteenth-century beautification campaigns, the site retains its original configuration of gravestones alongside family burials in small rectangular plots. The grounds feature distinct carved markers attributed to the Boston Carver and Joseph Lamson and sons, who are also buried here.
