Description

M. Paul Friedberg designed the 1.76-acre trapezoid-shaped landscape, later revised by Oehme-Van Sweden, bounded by 14th, 15th, and E Streets NW. At its commemorative core, a portrait statue of General John J. Pershing stands amidst the walls of the American Expeditionary Forces Memorial, facing the National World War I Memorial site. The surrounding setting recalls the peaceful pursuits of towns, woods, and rivers across Belgium and France before their destruction in the First World War.
