Pedal an Echo Park Swan Past the Fountain's Mist

An hour pedaling a swan boat around Echo Park Lake, past lotus beds and a tall fountain with downtown LA's towers behind it.

This is a one-hour rental of a swan pedal boat on Echo Park Lake, just northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Wheel Fun Rentals holds the city's pedal boat concession here, picked from four bidders in 2017, and put its swan boats on the lake in March 2018. It works from a dock beside the Echo Park Boathouse, a Spanish Colonial Revival building first put up in 1932 and set out over the water. There is no guide and no set route. The hour goes wherever the front seats pedal it. Most riders aim for the same three things: the lotus beds, the tall fountain out on the water, and the downtown towers rising behind it. Each boat has a shade canopy overhead.

The listing prices the hour per person, with a lower rate for anyone 17 and under, and an adult has to be on every booking. One booking covers up to ten travelers, which means more than one boat.

Check In on the Dock, Then the Clock Starts

The listing asks you to arrive 15 minutes before your reserved time, and the hour starts once you are checked in on the dock. Late evening reservations get no slack: arrive late and the ride can be cut short. Several travelers describe waiting in a check-in line on the dock even with a reservation in hand.

Bring a physical, government-issued photo ID. The operator's rental rules require the renter to be 18 or older and hold that ID as collateral until the boat comes back, and one traveler in July 2026 only found out at the counter. The same rules say renters need to know how to swim, everyone wears a fitted life vest the whole time, and boats load and unload only at the dock.

Evening Slots and the LED Swans

After sunset the operator lights its swans with LEDs for what it calls night rides, and the boats glow against the lit-up skyline. The lit swans began as a summer program in 2019, and that September the operator said it would keep them running year-round. As of October 16, 2026, this listing sold start times from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM Monday through Thursday, and from 9:00 AM to 6:48 PM Friday through Sunday, on the dates checked through early January. The operator's winter hours, November 2, 2026 to March 5, 2027, run 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM every day, with the last boat going out an hour before closing.

The listing text never mentions the lights, and one traveler on an evening booking wrote that their swan never lit up. For evening rides the operator suggests a light blanket and a warm drink, and asks riders to keep the noise down for the neighbors.

Who Fits in Which Swan

Small swans take two adults and two children under 10. Large swans take up to five people, with a total weight limit of 1,400 pounds and an enclosed back bench where a passenger can skip the pedaling. The rental clerk picks the boat for your group. Children under 15 ride with a parent or guardian on board, and the listing has infants sit on an adult's lap.

Pedaling a full hour is a workout. One traveler called it "a workout if you pedal the whole hour," and the operator's rules ask renters to check the wind direction before leaving the dock. For riders who cannot pedal, the operator keeps a hand-crank pedal boat with a non-slip loading deck and grab rails; it is reserved by phone with the operator and is not part of this listing. The listing mentions service animals, and the operator's FAQ also welcomes friendly dogs: leashed in line and on the dock, lifted in and out of the boat by their owners, and kept out of the lake. The operator does not supply life jackets for dogs.

Snacks Welcome, No Alcohol Aboard

Food and drinks can come aboard. Alcohol cannot, and the operator also rules out large coolers. Swimming or jumping from a boat is not allowed, and breaking the boat rules can end a rental with no refund.

Parking near the lake is scarce, and the listing suggests a rideshare drop-off at the boathouse. Drivers can try the small paid public lot at 1149 Echo Park Avenue or street parking up Laguna Avenue; one traveler spent half an hour finding a spot.

A full refund needs cancellation at least 24 hours before the start time, and inside 24 hours there is none. The listing lets the operator call off a slot for bad weather, with another date or a full refund offered. The operator says its boats still go out in very light rain, mist and cold weather.

📍 Check in with Wheel Fun Rentals on the dock at Echo Park Lake, beside the boathouse at 751 Echo Park Avenue, 15 minutes before your slot. Take the long way to the fountain, drift close enough to feel the mist, then turn around and look back at the skyline.
