Pedal Across Alamitos Bay, Then Pull Up on the Sand

Every hydrobike seats a single rider, and the sand along Alamitos Peninsula runs beside most of the route out.

Pedal a hydrobike across Alamitos Bay.

Alamitos Bay is flat and protected, and it stays calm on days when the ocean outside is not. That is the whole appeal of pedaling across it. You sit up high on a frame mounted between two yellow floats, turn the pedals, and travel at roughly the speed of a slow jog. Nothing on this route leaves the bay. There is no ocean crossing and no harbor traffic to time your crossing around.

Check in thirty minutes before your departure time. Arriving late cuts into your time on the water, not the operator's.

Rentals run fifty-five minutes and every rider takes their own bike. The dock sits on Alamitos Bay at 110 N Marina Dr, and parking is free at Alamitos Bay Landing and along Marina Drive. Book the slot online before you drive over. Departures sell out, and walking up is a gamble.

One Rider, Two Floats, and a Cup Holder

Every hydrobike in the fleet seats one person. The frame carries two cup holders and a small storage cubby, and the operator hands out Coast Guard certified life jackets, which everyone on the water has to wear. After dark every bike in the fleet is LED-lit.

Children aged four to nine who cannot yet reach the pedals can ride along on an adult's bike. That ride-along seat exists on day rides only. Sunset, glow and two-hour departures carry no passengers, and every rider on those has to reach the pedals themselves.

Expect a mild workout. There is a learning curve of about a minute while the steering starts to make sense, and after that it is pedaling. You are the engine for the full fifty-five minutes.

Daylight, Golden Hour, or Lit Up After Dark

The bay reads as three different places depending on when you push off. Daylight gives you the waterfront houses and the moored boats in full color. Golden hour turns the water copper behind the masts. After dark the bikes themselves light up, and you are pedaling a glowing object across black water.

Sunset and glow departures sell out from June through September. The operator runs generally Wednesday to Sunday, roughly noon until nine in the evening, and closes for weather. Departure times shift with the season. The booking calendar is the only reliable answer for any particular day.

How Far Fifty-Five Minutes Actually Gets You

The sandy beach along Alamitos Peninsula runs beside most of the route, on the way out and again on the way back. It is not a single destination you have to reach. Pull up on the sand ten minutes in, or keep pedaling and find a quieter stretch. Either way it fits comfortably inside this rental.

The Naples canals are the bigger trip. The operator puts that canal loop at about two miles round trip, says it fits an hour only if you sprint, and points riders who want it to the two-hour rental. This listing describes a ride around Outer Naples Island, which is worth reading with that timing in mind.

Leg Length Decides This, Not Birthdays

The operator's stated guideline is ten and up, and leg length is what actually settles it. Measure from the sit bone to the bottom of the heel with the leg fully extended. About twenty-eight inches reaches the pedals. Plenty of eight and nine year olds manage a bike of their own, and the occasional adult cannot.

The limit is 250 pounds total per hydrobike, covering the rider, any child riding along, and whatever you carry aboard. Anyone under eighteen needs an adult along. Children under four cannot ride at all, passenger seat included.

Alcohol is not permitted on the water. Dogs stay ashore, though the listing records that service animals are welcome. The listing also flags the ride as unsuitable during pregnancy and for anyone with poor cardiovascular health, and asks for at least a moderate level of fitness.

Check in happens at the dock on Alamitos Bay, listed at 110 N Marina Dr and described by the operator as the South Long Dock in front of the Ballast Point brewery building. The whole fleet lives there and there is no separate storefront to find first. Free parking sits at Alamitos Bay Landing and along Marina Drive, and the red-curbed boater spaces are the ones to leave alone. A restroom is in the Landing just up from the dock, and the crew holds the key.

Cancelling this booking returns a full refund as long as you do it at least twenty-four hours before your departure time. Wear shoes you would not mind getting a little saltwater on. At full pedal extension your feet sit about six inches above the water, most riders finish the hour dry, and the last stretch back runs alongside the same sand you passed on the way out.
