Description

Erected in 1877–1878, the 44-foot neoclassical monument rests on a Maine blue granite base at Pennsylvania Avenue and First Street, N.W. Conceived by Admiral David D. Porter and sculpted by Franklin Simmons, it brings together multiple symbolic groupings. At the top, figures of Grief and History appear alongside Victory and infant figures of Mars and Neptune, while a figure of Peace holding an olive sprig faces the Capitol.
