Past Fort Adams and Rose Island Lighthouse From Newport Harbor

The Coastal Queen's narrated run past forts, lighthouses and Hammersmith Farm, staying inside Newport Harbor and the East Passage.

The Coastal Queen pulls away from Bowen's Wharf for 75 minutes on Newport Harbor and the East Passage of Narragansett Bay, with a guide on the microphone. The operator's own description lists church steeples, forts, lighthouses, harbor estates and mega yachts. Its photo captions on the listing add Castle Hill, Clingstone and a pass under the Pell Bridge.

The cruise stays inside the harbor and the East Passage, so it does not go past The Breakers or the other famous mansions. The operator said so in an October 2025 reply to a traveler, and several travelers between 2021 and 2025 said they had expected the Bellevue Avenue mansions. What the route does pass is Hammersmith Farm, which the operator calls the childhood home of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy.

The listing sells one option in four age bands, and children four and under carry a fare of their own; an infant rides on an adult's lap. As of October 13, 2026, the listing and the operator's own booking calendar both showed two afternoon sailings, at 1:30 PM and 3:30 PM, on most days through November 1, then a single 1:15 PM sailing on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from November 6 to November 22.

This booking refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before departure, with no refund inside 24 hours. Tickets bought directly from the operator are non-refundable, so that 24-hour window belongs to this listing.

Forts on Both Shores, an Island Lighthouse Between

The listing names three forts. Fort Adams sits on the Newport side, Fort Wetherill on the Jamestown side, and Fort Hamilton on Rose Island, whose lighthouse the boat passes. None of the forts is a stop; the boat passes and the guide narrates.

The operator's captions add Castle Hill, Clingstone, the house that sits on its own rock in the bay, and Hammersmith Farm. The operator also writes that you may see a seal or two. Travelers reported seals in April and May of 2025 and 2026, one of them near Castle Hill and on the rocks by Rose Island.

A Heated Deck Below, a Curtained Deck Above

The operator's fleet page describes a glass-enclosed lower deck with a full-service bar, a snack bar, cafe-style seating and a heated cabin. The top deck is covered, with clear side curtains that roll down for warmth or up for the breeze. A traveler on a December 2024 sailing expected a cold ride and found the boat fully enclosed in vinyl and heated. That matters in October and November, when the calendar still runs.

The bar takes cash and cards for mixed drinks, beer, wine and soft drinks, and drinks are not part of the ticket. The operator does not allow carry-on alcohol or food on board. There is a restroom on the boat.

Sit Where You Can Hear the Guide

Travelers from 2023 through September 2026 keep returning to one complaint: the speakers make the guide hard to follow, and several also mention a British accent on top of the volume. In September 2026 the operator replied that it would share the acoustics and volume comments with its team. One 2023 traveler could only hear the guide after moving from the lower cabin to the top deck. If the history is what you came for, take a seat upstairs and dress for the wind.

Others had no trouble. Travelers in 2026 called their narrators knowledgeable and funny, and one noted the guide spoke just enough, with music in between. The operator says it balances the narration on purpose, since some passengers come for the scenery.

Park Early, Then Check In at the Booth

Check-in is at the Coastal Queen Cruises ticket booth at 5 Bowen's Landing on Bowen's Wharf, between the Newport Harbor Hotel & Marina and The Landing restaurant. Give the agent the name on the booking and collect your boarding passes. The operator asks passengers to arrive 30 minutes before departure and says it cannot hold the boat for late passengers.

Parking is where people lose that half hour. Travelers in 2024 and 2025 missed sailings while hunting for a space, and travelers from 2023 to 2026 called the lots nearest the wharf expensive. The operator's parking page points to the Newport Gateway Transportation Center garage and the lots at 1 America's Cup Avenue and 1 West Marlborough Street, 15 to 20 minutes on foot from Bowen's Wharf, as the ones that usually have the most space.

🧭 The map pin is labeled Bowen's Wharf. Head for the marina, where the Coastal Queen Cruises booth sits at 5 Bowen's Landing.

The listing marks the cruise as weather-dependent: if it is called off, you are offered another date or a full refund. Travelers have reported weather cancellations, including one announced after passengers had boarded. Only service animals are allowed on board. The operator has said the boat was designed to be ADA accessible, and travelers using wheelchairs in 2023 and 2025 wrote that boarding worked, with staff helping them aboard. The operator's FAQ says strollers are not allowed on its cruises, though the booking terms for this cruise only ask that they be folded and stowed while boarding. Children must be supervised throughout. Gratuities are not included, and the crew can only take tips in cash.

After that it is 75 minutes of harbor, bay and history, with a drink from the bar if you want one.
