Paint an Adobe Church or O'Keeffe Homage in Santa Fe

A small acrylic class near the Santa Fe Plaza where Laura Tarnoff takes beginners and practiced painters through one canvas.

Paint an adobe church or an O'Keeffe homage in Santa Fe.

Laura Tarnoff guides this session herself, in a studio inside the Santa Fe Village building downtown. You leave with a finished painting of your own, whether or not you have held a brush before.

One booking covers up to six people, and every art supply is included. Depending on the date, sessions start at 10:00 AM, 2:00 PM or 6:00 PM.

Pick the Scene Before You Pick Up a Brush

The listing names the subjects on offer: Northern New Mexico landscapes, adobe churches, local wildlife, Georgia O'Keeffe-inspired pieces, Fun Favorites and Masterpieces. The studio's own subject library adds Day of the Dead.

You choose at the start of the session, and the studio says Laura keeps more subjects on hand than either list shows.

From there she teaches step by step, mixing colors and working out the composition with one-on-one help at your easel. One traveler who reviewed this class in September 2024 described her approach this way: "She makes suggestions, but accepts you may not take them."

Who Teaches This Session

Artful Soul is co-owned by two artists, Laura Tarnoff and Mickey Bond. This listing books Laura's session. Mickey's sessions are sold separately on the studio's website.

By the studio's own account, Laura is a full-time fine artist with over 30 years of teaching experience and a New Mexico Level 2 art teaching license. It says she spent a decade as founder and executive director of the Tarnoff Art Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and that she is a graduate of the American Academy of Art in Chicago.

Six Seats, Shared With Whoever Books Them

A session takes six painters at most, and seats go first come, first served. A booking for two can share the table with up to four other people. The studio also says you may end up the only party signed up. Groups of seven or more count as a private class, which the studio books by phone.

Anyone 11 or older can be on a booking, as long as an adult is part of it. Children pay the same per-person rate as adults. Service animals are allowed, according to the listing.

The Studio Door Is Around the Back

Artful Soul is on the ground floor of the Santa Fe Village building at 227 Don Gaspar Avenue, Suite 12-A. The studio's site says its door is off the building's back entrance.

After 5:00 PM the building's front door may be locked. The studio says the back entrance stays open. The booking page asks anyone coming to an evening session, or struggling to find the studio, to text the host, who will meet them at the front door.

The studio's site offers the Santa Fe Village back lot to arrivals after 5:30 PM and says nothing about parking there earlier in the day. Neither the listing nor the studio describes step-free access. Check with the studio before booking if that matters.

Cancel at least 24 hours before your start time for a full refund on this booking. Inside 24 hours there is no refund, and booking closes 24 hours before each session. Tickets bought directly on the studio's website follow a stricter rule, with all sales final.

Plan on two and a half to three hours at the easel. You walk out with the canvas in hand.
