Description

Located at Kalaeloa on Navy-owned land, this water-filled site acquired its name from decades of ordnance-related scrap and military debris dumped into the pool during its time as a naval air station. Beneath that modern layer, the sinkhole preserves a much older record: charcoal and pollen trapped in its layers have helped researchers track the environmental impact of early voyagers, yielding settlement estimates dating to the late first millennium A.D. Local archaeologists and the Oahu Historic Preservation Commission continue to monitor the pond to advocate for its long-term protection.
