One Seat, One Captain, Ninety Minutes of Lake Travis Sunset

Float On sells single seats on its own pontoons, so one person can ride out for the sunset without chartering a boat. A captain takes the wheel, the drinks are yours to bring, and the boat is back at the same slip ninety minutes later.

Catch a Lake Travis sunset from Hurst Harbor.

Getting onto Lake Travis usually means renting a boat. Float On sells the other way in: single seats on its own pontoons, a captain at the wheel, ninety minutes out and back.

The booking form takes one traveller, so a solo evening on the lake costs a single fare. Ten is the ceiling on one booking, and the company's own pitch is aimed at people who do not have a boatful of friends to bring along.

It runs more than one boat for the same departure. If your group booked separately and wants to sit together, its notes ask you to say so at the time you book.

Departures leave from Float On's slip at Hurst Harbor Marina, on the south shore of the lake in Lakeway. The marina sits in Hurst Creek Cove off Clara Van Street, and the company's pages put the drive from downtown Austin at thirty to thirty-five minutes. It is a working marina rather than a single dock, on this shore since 1978, with 300 covered slips and 200 dry-stack spaces, and Float On is one of four charter operations running out of it.

Adult fares start at USD 69. The booking form carries adult, child and infant bands, and it will not take a party without an adult in it.

The Route, and What the Captain Makes of It

The captain doubles as the guide. By the company's own wording that may mean landmarks, the houses along the shore, or stories the captain has collected on this water. There is no script and no recording, and a couple of guests have come away saying their captain barely spoke.

The published route has no scheduled stops. It passes a cove the company places between Mossy Hollow and Northshore Marina, then Starnes Island in the Sandy Creek arm. The operator's route notes say the island answers to Monkey Island, Rattlesnake and Snake Island depending on who is talking, that the lake's fireworks go up from it, and that it appeared in Spy Kids. Both of those hold up away from the operator: local coverage of the lake names the island as the launch point for the Independence Day fireworks, on July 3 in recent years rather than the fourth, and a local account of the island puts one of the opening scenes of Robert Rodriguez's Spy Kids on it.

The shoreline does a lot of the work either way. Limestone shelves step down to the waterline, private docks hang off cantilevered ramps, and the houses get larger the further the boat goes.

The Light Moves, and So Does the Season

A sunset cruise has to chase the sun, so the clock changes through the year. On the seasons the booking calendar publishes, the boat pushes off at 7:30 PM through early August, at 7:00 PM later that month, and at 6:30 PM by late September.

The published seasons all sit between late May and late September, Friday to Sunday. There are no weekday departures on the calendar, and none at all between the last September sailing and the following late May. The season has gaps inside it too, so the run is narrower than four months of weekends.

Weather is the other variable. The company says it sails rain or shine and does not count cloud, a temperature drop or light rain as bad weather. It lists temperatures under 55 degrees and winds over 20 miles an hour among the conditions that let it call an outing off.

What You Bring, and What the Dock Turns Away

Drinks are yours to bring and alcohol is welcome. Nothing to drink comes with the fare.

Glass and styrofoam are banned at Hurst Harbor Marina, so cans, pouches and hard plastic are the way in. The company also asks guests to leave red wine at home, and its FAQ says it does not supply ice.

Two other things shape what a group packs. There is no bathroom on board, so the company tells people to go before boarding and to ask the captain for a quick stop halfway if they need one. The harbor covers the first half of that: a guest in September 2025 found its restrooms clean by the standards of public bathrooms, and behind a door code worth asking for on the way down. Dogs stay behind on the public boats as a courtesy to the other passengers, though service animals are allowed.

Children can come. The booking form carries a child band from three to twelve and an infant band below it, prams and strollers are fine, and the company's rule is that everyone under thirteen wears a life vest on the water. It keeps vests in children's sizes and suggests bringing your own if you already have one that fits.

Finding the Boat at Hurst Harbor

There is no ticket office at the marina. The company's instruction is to park, walk down the dock toward the water, and look for the captain waiting with your group.

How long that walk is depends on the lake. Guests in the low-water summer of 2023 describe the same path four ways: a long hike to the loading dock; a climb back up that one of them called very steep, with a golf cart asked for and never produced because nobody could find the keys; a van ride down to the water because the lake was so low; and, the same summer, a clean pickup that was not a far walk at all. The operator said in July 2026 that Lake Travis had refilled to full conservation pool for the first time since 2019. The van and the cart are not standing services, so anyone who needs the short version of that walk should raise it when they book.

The listing asks you to arrive fifteen minutes early. The operator's own booking notes ask for thirty, and say the boats leave promptly without waiting. Traffic and parking are the reason it gives, and thirty is the number to plan on.

Parking is at the marina. The company encourages a rideshare if the evening is going to involve what you brought aboard. The captain's tip sits outside the fare as well; the company recommends twenty percent and asks guests to carry cash for it.

The fare is refundable up to twenty-four hours out. Inside that window you are liable for the whole amount, and the operator counts a no-show the same way.

Hurst Harbor sits in Hurst Creek Cove on the south shore, at 16405 Clara Van Street in Lakeway.

Ninety minutes later the boat is back at the same slip. The sun will have gone down over the western arm of the lake, the water will have held the color of the sky for a few minutes after it did, and the drive back into Austin is the same half hour it was on the way out, with the hills dark on either side.
