One of Salem's Ten Ghosts Is Lying to You

A phone ghost hunt loops from Charlotte Forten Park past Charter Street, Salem Common and the Witch House, then back to the water.

This is a self-guided ghost hunt played on the Questo app, which the listing casts as your ghost scanner. Ten ghosts wait along the route, each stuck on a mystery it left unfinished, and solving the puzzle tied to each one catches it. One of the ten is lying to you, and naming that ghost at the last stop is how you win. The cases come from the game's script: a bride poisoned through her own wedding bouquet, an actor who hid a code in his final monologue, a night manager who ran back into a burning hotel. The streets they play out on are real Salem.

No guide walks with you. You book here, unlock the quest on Questo's website with your booking code, and the map, the clues and the story all live in the Questo app on your phone.

From Charlotte Forten Park to the Witch House and Back

The game opens in Charlotte Forten Park on the Derby Street waterfront, where the app tests whether you have the sight before the first ghost shows up. From there the listing's route climbs to Charter Street, beside what it calls the oldest burying ground in Salem, then crosses Salem Common and follows Brown Street past the Salem Witch Museum. It continues onto the Essex Street pedestrian mall and down to City Hall, over to Lynde Street, along to the Witch House and the Bewitched statue in Lappin Park, and past Derby Square before finishing back on the waterfront. The listing puts the walk at about 1.4 miles, with as many breaks as you want. Plan for 90 minutes to two hours, the range the listing gives.

October Puts Market Stalls at the Starting Line

Charlotte Forten Park sits on the South River and honors Charlotte Forten, the abolitionist who became Salem State University's first African-American graduate, according to Destination Salem. A life-sized bronze of her, The Moving Spirit of Love by Ai Qiu Hopen, was installed in the park in 2024. This season the Haunted Happenings Marketplace runs from September 26 to November 1, and it has expanded to Charlotte Forten Park, joining Derby Square and Salem Common. Three of the game's stops are marketplace sites, so on market days you will pass vendor stalls there through November 1.

Your Booking Code Unlocks the Quest

The code is your booking reference, meaning the digits after BR-. Enter it with your email on Questo's unlock page, then sign in to the Questo app with that same email and the quest waits under Quests. The listing asks for a charged smartphone with internet. Download the story and the map before you head out; after that, the booking notes say the game runs without internet. Booked more than one ticket? You can invite the other players right after activating, or later from the app. Pricing is per person, with a lower rate per head once two or more book together, and tickets come in a single age band, 14 to 99.

Who It Suits and What to Bring

The listing pitches it for Halloween or any night you want creepy stories, and says it plays best after dark with your phone's light on. The booking notes say the quest is available every day at any hour, and the listing lets you stop for a break and carry on later. There is no live game master or guide, no private transport and no meal; hints and round-the-clock support are on hand if a puzzle stalls you. Wear comfortable walking shoes and start with at least half your battery, the minimum the booking notes ask for.

📍 The game starts at Charlotte Forten Park, 289 Derby Street, Salem. Cancel at least 24 hours before your chosen start for a full refund; inside that window there is no refund. The final chapter waits back on the waterfront, where you line up ten clues and name the ghost who lied all night.
